My Freeper sister-in-law is coming to visit next weekend.
Well, she is not legally my sister-in-law because it is illegal for me and my boyfriend to get married.

My boyfriend loves her to death as he and his family are very close, except for the fact that two of his sisters collaborate (vote) with people that would just as soon see us dead or in prison. I told my boyfriend, half jokingly, to have her stay in a hotel but that didn't go over so well.

Anywho, I'm looking for ideas regarding books and literature to leave strategically placed in the apartment. I have a couple of Al Franken's books so I'm off to a good start. Also, I have a good article from "Harper's" called "Baghdad Year Zero" (absolute must read). I'm going to print a couple cool pics ("gunship Jesus" and "Who would Jesus bomb?")that I found on DU and put them on the fridge so she sees them while reaching for the crappy beer I will be forced to have in my fridge (no French wine or imports for her).

Any suggestions? Four Amazon days left till the "eagle" lands. Remember, I have to keep it simple as she IS a freeper. It will be hard but itching powder is out of the question.

BTW. As a FABULOUS side note: The reason she is coming to visit is her freeper boyfriend just dumped her and she is a little down in the dumps. My boyfriend thinks he was the one that brainwashed her.

He is a piece of work:
1.Comes from a wealthy family that owns a successful business.
2.Sent to law school on daddy's dime.
3.Became an attorney.
4.Dis-barred for stealing or co-mingling a clients money.
5.Now works for the family business making a ton of money.

Now thinks everyone should "lift themselves up by their bootstraps".

Fucking classic.

6. I have a mischievous side but it is USUALLY overcome by a
desire to educate.

It's an uphill battle though. Her (democrat) Mom leaked the fact that she was a big fan of Condi's when I was cursing Condi on the television this morning.

I'm supposed to be on my best behavior but it is MY (well half) house.

45. Yes. He has weaknesses...for instance he thinks Bush is a Christian,
although misguided, and he thinks Billy Graham is not of the same ilk as Falwell, Robertson and the rest of the shills. I disagree. I think Graham is worse in many ways because his hate is so insidious.

Get the book. It's a good read. It's a great one to share with Fundies and Freepers.
Also, get some copies of his magazine, Sojourner, and slip one into her luggage.

Showing her kindness and understanding during a difficult time might be something she'll incorporate into her psyche. If she doesn't, she wasn't going to be swayed by the writings of "libruls" anyway.

I wish you and your spouse lots of luck. The first year of marriage was difficult with my husband over family stress issues.

13. Go for stuff that doesn't take hours to read
or stuff that requires a long attention span. I'd skip the WWJB poster.

Instead, I'd go for short articles she has a high chance of reading. And leave a good magazine on the back of the toilet, where she can secretly read it without having to do it openly. Same with the room where she's staying - that's more of a target area than the living room, so she doesn't have to admit that she read something of the opposing view.

Set it in plain view. Freeps hate him and she might foam at the mouth.

But if you're wanting to get her at the very least to think about her positions, I would go with something tame and not so in your face. Since she's down from a break-up, showing some good old fashioned liberal compassion would be a great start. :)

18. AMERICA by John Stewart
http://www.comedycentral.com/tv_shows/thedailyshowwithjonstewart/book.jhtml

Jon Stewart, host of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show, and his coterie of patriots deliver a hilarious look at American government. Termed a "political king-maker" by Newsweek, and "the Dan Rather of infotainment" by Vanity Fair, Jon Stewart, along with the writers of The Daily Show, combines his riotous wit and razor-sharp insight in this hilarious book.

American-style democracy is the world's most beloved form of government, which explains why so many other nations are eager for us to impose it on them. But what is American democracy?

In AMERICA (THE BOOK), Jon Stewart and The Daily Show writing staff offer their insights into our unique system of government, dissecting its institutions, explaining its history and processes, and exploring the reasons why concepts like "One man, one vote," "Government by the people," and "Every vote counts" have become such popular urban myths.

Among the topics:

* Ancient Rome: The First Republicans
* The Founding Fathers: Young, Gifted, and White
* The President: King of Democracy
* The Supreme Court: 18 Legs, Four Tits, One Mission
* Running for Office: What Are You Thinking?
* The Media: Can It Be Stopped?
* The Future of Democracy: The Constitutional Robocracy and You!

BUT, you can also consider this as a prime opportunity to engage her. By that I mean, build up some level of trust with her and then insidiously slip in Democratic ideas. If she's says something even remotely related to a Democratic principle, reiderate what she said and reframe it in Dem terms (think Lakoff).

Confronting someone head on doesn't usually win them over. If you show absolute disrespect for "her" (or her boyfriend's) beliefs, she will just feel shamed. Shaming people or degrading them does not make them receptive, it creates resistance.

Attract more bees with honey!

BTW, I would just leave your house the way it is. If you have Dem materials out, fine. Just be honest and be yourself. ;)

It's HUGE, white, with BIG red letters on it and impossible to miss.

Leave it on the coffee table. It starts with the Bill of Rights (very radical stuff, that) and goes all the way to a 2003 document against the invasion of Iraq.

And everything in between. It's good reading.

33. Common Sense by Thomas Paine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28Book%29

Common Sense by Thomas Paine

Common Sense was a pamphlet first published on January 10, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War by Thomas Paine. Its pages contained a denouncement of British rule.

Arguments against British rule in Common Sense:

It was ridiculous for an island to rule a continent
America was not a "British nation"; it was composed of influences from all of Europe

Even if Britain was the "mother country" of America, that made her actions all the more horrendous, for no mother would harm her children so brutally

Being a part of Britain would drag America into unnecessary European wars, and keep it from the international commerce at which America excelled.

The publication of this pamphlet was key in the growth of popular support for independence from Britain. Thomas Jefferson took ideas from both this publication and John Locke when writing the Declaration of Independence.

Less-quoted sections of the pamphlet include Paine's over-optimistic view of America's military potential at the time of the Revolution. For example, he spends pages describing how colonial shipyards, by using the large amounts of lumber available in the country, could quickly create a navy that could rival the Royal Navy.

'Common Sense' was tremendously popular. John Taylor Gatto has reported that "Thomas Paine’s Common Sense sold 600,000 copies to a population of 3,000,000, 20 percent of whom were slaves and 50 percent indentured servants."

Quotes
A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom.

Society is produced by our wants, and government by wickedness; the former promotes our happiness positively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher. Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil.

Every thing that is right or natural pleads for separation. The blood of the slain, the weeping voice of nature cries, 'tis time to part.
But where says some is the king of America? I'll tell you friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the royal brute of Britain. ... so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America the law is king.

with some cat tacos... or iguana stew!

51. I second the recommendations for compassion...
...and you don't want to hurt your partner by hurting her, as he obviously loves her anyway.

However, I also wholeheartedly endorse "America: The Book" for your purposes, because it is genuinely hilarious while getting the points across, and anybody who's down from a breakup is needing and open to a good laugh.

57. Print out copies of various "Top 10 Conservative Idiots,"
staple them together, and leave around.

59. Be sure and have a "Bushisms" calendar displayed prominently on
your kitchen counter. She has to go into the kitchen some time!

Maybe there's time for you to get a rush shipment of one of those T-shirts from www.whitehouse.org. It's a picture of a guy with someone's hand over his mouth, and it says, "Shut up, faggot! Your kind belongs at the back of the bus!" You could get it in either a large poster, or a T-shirt.

Is there time for you to get some army duds and dress up an effigy, and nail the figure to a cross? I think a "soldier" on a cross would send a powerful message to the "Christians", especially if you wrote, "He died for YOUR candidate's sins" underneath.

61. Freeper boyfriends don't "dump" people... they "ban" them! Here,
this will help you keep your sanity.

Anyone here who hasn't seen the posters/T-shirt designs at that site should go there now! Every time I see them I laugh till my sides hurt. They are the ultimate antidote to Bush cultists' madness!

Example: a pic of Lynne Cheney and Laura Bush, smiling, and the caption is, "You're First Lady Now!..... and XANAX helped you get there!"

62. Invite a handsome, friendly, single leftwing guy that you know..
to attend a small dinner party, along with one or two other friends of similar views. Add fine cuisine, music, red wine, fire, cheery camaraderie of friends for late-night conversation.
