Guardsman Changed Story Of Iraqi's Death

An Indiana National Guardsman is accused of murdering an Iraqi police officer, then shooting himself to cover up the incident. Cpl. Dustin Berg faced a military hearing Thursday to decide if there is enough evidence to call for a court martial in the case.

Cpl. Berg is charged with murder and lying about the incident. He's also accused of wearing a purple heart he never earned.

A criminal investigator reviewing the case testified Berg first said he fired shots only after an Iraqi police officer raised his weapon and wounded him. Months later, Berg admitted to firing first, killing the Iraqi, then shooting himself in the abdomen with the Iraqi's AK-47. Berg's defense countered by saying Berg fired at the Iraqi police officer in self defense after a confrontation.

They also accused criminal investigators of being overzealous in charging American soldiers with overseas crimes.
