I deal with people on a regular basis who say things they don't have any intention of following through.
Does "Survivor's Island" represent "real life".
It would seem so.
I think the change began with automated answering devices.
Do you feel the same frustration I do when calling the bank, tech support, utility companies, etc. and just want the priviledge of talking to a live person? No one answers the phone. "Listen to your menu options". I didn't want a menu. Just want someone to help me with a current issue.
Then there's "Cooperation Theory":

What is the Game of Life?
by Paul Callahan The Game of Life (or simply Life) is not a game in the conventional sense. There are no players, and no winning or losing. Once the "pieces" are placed in the starting position, the rules determine everything that happens later. Nevertheless, Life is full of surprises! In most cases, it is impossible to look at a starting position (or pattern) and see what will happen in the future. The only way to find out is to follow the rules of the game.
http://www.math.com/students/wonders/life/life.htmlThe social sciences seek to understand not only how individuals behave but also how the interaction of many individuals leads to large-scale outcomes. Understanding a political or economic system requires more than an understanding of the individuals that comprise the system. It also requires understanding how the individuals interact with each other, and how the results can be more than the sum of the parts.
