Social Security Question
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 09:29 AM by Dirty Hippie
Has anyone determined the impact of the Bush SS reform plan on Social Secuity payments to the disabled (SSI)?

I've read several articles but none address this issue.

My disabled adult son depends on SSI for 100% of his income.

I thought I would turn to the great minds at DU for an answer.

3. Guess
Since SSI benefits are paid from general revenues, and not the payroll tax, I doubt if there would be any direct effect. I don't know if he has a plan for SSI specifically. However, the medicaid that usually comes with SSI may be another matter.

Like I said, it is my guess that the privatization of SS would have no direct effect on SSI because it is not funded by the payroll tax. SSD, or Social Security Disability payments, which are funded with the payroll tax is different and would be adversely impacted by privatization. One needs to take a look at the budget to see exactly what the administration has in mind for SSI. Since there really nothing fleshed out in the privatization scheme, it is hard to tell what the SSD folks will end up with.

Social Security Disability benefits (SSD)
Social Security Disability Benefits or SSDI are paid to individuals who have worked in the recent years. Usually you have to work 5 out of the last 10 years. For individuals under 31 years old, the requirements are a little different since they have not been in the work force as long. More...

Supplemental Security Income benefits (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income benefits or SSI are paid to individuals who are low level income and disabled whether or not the individual has worked in the past. SSI child's disability benefits are paid to children who are under 18 years old, are disabled and the parents or guardian are lower level income. More...

8. SSI
Haven't found where it is in the budget yet. However, it does contain a provision to extend SSI benefits to about 1,500 refeugees who are slated to loose their SSI benefits due to a seven year cap that was previously enacted.
