"Inventor of the Dean Scream"
I read another post where some R/W pundidiot described Dr. Dean as "infamous" for the Dean Scream...

We need to change this language and adopt the Dean Scream, as many on this site have been advocating. I would suggest that when referring to the Dean Scream, we refer to Doctor Dean as:

Howard Dean, the "inventor of the Dean Scream"

or the "originator of the Dean Scream"

Thoughts?

4. I disagree
I don't think there's any reason to be embarrassed by it, but I DO think there's plenty of reason to hold the media accountable for trying to define him by a moment that they manufactured through directional microphones.

And I believe there's good reason to make the point - every single time we see the media use it - of contacting the station and demanding they use My Pet Goat as the moment to define Bush, and tell them it's unfair and unbalanced reporting if they don't.

I'm not satisfied letting the media get away with junk journalism like that, and laughing it off.

7. "Nuanced" response to public mythology is ineffective...
I agree with you that the way the scream was put forward was both misleading and irresponsible, and the product of manipulation of microphones.

Unfortunately, the scream has entered into the public mythology as authentic, and they HEARD it. Repeatedly, ad-nauseum. Accordingly, it has become a "fact" that people aren't going to disclaim from their consciousness because it is 'proved' that it was a trick of microphone manipulation.

You and I and most DUers probably know by now that the 'scream' taken in context with the general roar of noise in the room would have been unremarkable. Most of the public, however, assumes that the scream occurred in a vacuum, and occurred much the way it was portrayed in the media. Are we going to be successful making that impression disappear? Possibly, but IMO extremely unlikely.

Accordingly, like in trial/debate advocacy, when you have a fact or perception you cannot change, you must embrace it and make it YOUR fact. To make the Dean Scream OUR fact, we must be proud of it, and claim it, and make it our rallying cry.

The Dean Scream is how we distinguish our movement as populist, energetic, proud, unapologetic and enthusiastic. I for one am ready to take the scream as my own expression of feeling.

If four years of being lied to doesn't make you want to scream, what will? If you don't feel like screaming to herald the changes we are going to make in policy, you need an injection of enthusiasm. An injection of enthusiasm will be more effective IMO than yet another demonstration of how the R/W press is "against us" by manipulating the mikes.

YEEEEAAAARRGGH!!!

14. Bush does 5 or 6 things every day ...
... that are twice as embarassing. The difference is Bush's snafus are hidden, not played 5 times every half hour.

"Got any wood?????"

11. I hope he identifies the DLC flunky
who shopped the cherrypicked video and audio from that isolation mike to the GOP and then to the news networks.

In the meantime, yes, he has to figure out how to turn it into a positive thing of being angry enough at an illegal war and the destruction of the US economy to SCREAM ABOUT IT.
