said that she had never really thought about just how offensive it is that
girls and boys often exchange Valentine's with their same sex peers-until
this year. "It just hit me all of a sudden that this is something that
really undermines traditional family values," says Boone. While Boone's
daughter Rebecca, who attends third grade at Buford Elementary, will be
bringing Valentine's cards to school today, she will be distributing them
only to the boys in her class.

"This is how it starts, with one little girl giving another little girl a
Valentine," says Boone. "But before you know it, you've got serious

I remember agonizing over the Valentine's I gave the boys when I was that age, because other than the couple that I did think were cute, I would have been mortified if any of the others thought I "liked" them. I never thought twice about giving cards to all the girls.

Fortunately, most of the cards marketed for young children are fairly innocuous and don't say anything more racy than "Be My Valentine". This is as ridiculous as all the furor about Halloween costumes and parties.

In 2nd grade I had a crush on a girl, so I decided to add a little code to her card, "I-heart-U". Of course I accidentally put that card in the wrong envelope, a guy's envelope. Oops! He wasn't happy about it, but he understood when I told him about the mistake. :)

I am an elementary teacher and if that little girl was in my class, she wouldn't be allowed to distribute her valentines because she didn't bring one for everyone. That is the rule in every classroom at every school I know of.

When I was in grade school we were told "if you bring a valentine for one, you bring a Valentine for all", so no one would be left out. They even sent you home with a list of all your classmates so your parents would make sure you did it right.

Hey, it was a lot of fun to open 30 valentines and stuff ourselves with cupcakes!! We always tried to stretch it out for a LONG time so we wouldn't have to go back to the 3 Rs!

I grew up in the 50's-60's going to a Catholic parochial school where the boys were taught on one side of the building, the girls on the other. We did Valentine's Day in class and every girl gave out Valentines to (nearly) every other girl. We were Not a hotbed of lesbians.
