Do know who St. Valentine actually was?

It's actually all very complicated, the day actually being based on a pagan religion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Valentine%27s_Day

According to one particularly nice legend, St. Valentine was a priest who performed illegal marriages. The emperor of Rome, Claudius II, outlawed roman troops getting married. The idea being that married soldiers were more likely to desert, or some such thing. St. Valentine was martyred for performing these marriages anyway, despite the law.

It was probably not coincidence that the first gay marriages in this recent movement of gay marriages occurred on Feb. 14th, 2004, although the significance was probably lost on many.

So, I just want to say to all you modern day Rosa Parkses: happy anniversary.
