LONDON (Reuters) - Private equity firm The Carlyle Group more than doubled the amount of cash it returned to its investors in 2004 as it sold a greater amount of businesses and stakes.

The company returned $5.3 billion to investors, compared with $2.3 billion in 2003, it said in a statement Monday. The firm also raised $7.8 billion, up from $2 billion a year ago, and invested $2.7 billion in 2004, up $100 million on 2003.

Private equity firms are doing deals amid widely-available debt and a lack of competition for some businesses from trade bidders. Carlyle made 107 investments in 2004, more than double the previous year's number.

2. Taxation of dividend income is at all-time low rates.
Thanks to the GOP tax-cuts-for-the-wealthy, dividend income (from the labor of others) is taxed at half the rate of payroll income (from one's own labor).
