Congressmembers to file Freedom of Information Act regarding Gannon
From the Raw Story:

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/index.php?p=78

Two Democratic congressmembers will file a Freedom of Information Act request with Homeland Security and the White House seeking records on the discredited conservative reporter with ties to prostitution and apparent access to confidential CIA information, RAW STORY has learned.

The letter, which is to current Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge (Chertoff is being voted on today and will not yet be sworn in any event), will not mention activist Jim Guckert’s efforts at prostitution, which was revealed by a progressive blog Monday.

Congressmen John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and congresswoman Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) will sign the request.

“News reports also indicate that Mr. Guckert would not be considered a bona fide journalist by his peers in the press corps, as most of his claims to legitimacy have already been discredited,” the members write in the final version prepared for signature and released to RAW STORY. “Access to the President and his press corps is highly competitive, and many seasoned journalists have not had the honor of attending the events or enjoying the access Mr. Guckert has. “

“We are concerned that such an individual was allowed within a few feet of the President when the public is routinely disallowed any possible contact with either the President or the White House. “

3. and I wish he'd file impeachment papers
I don't care that this would never
pass with Republican majorities...
it really is a crime to ignore the
crimes of this administration.

If any time in history warranted
a pResident stepping down, it's now.

2. I have a question about government "records"
I am glad that Conyers and Slaughter are being diligent and brave on this issue. I will write them and tell them so.

However, I have a question about government "records."

I always find it curious when someone requests potentially incriminating records from the government. If someone requests records, what's to stop someone from destroying records or creating "laundered" documents.

It just seems odd to me that criminal thugs would leave a paper trail and then relinquish the evidence.

Anyone else find this curious? Or am I smoking my socks?

5. I agree! How are these documents secured? What assurance
do we have that they're real? The easy thing to do would be mess with them.

7. I've turned over documents in response to FOIA requests,
and you black out any info you think they shouldn't see. You'd be surprised how much lee-way a government official has concerning FOIA requests. You could pretty much black out the whole document without much repercussion. And you look for excuses to avoiding giving over certain documents. I mean if the request doesn't exactly spell it out, you don't have to turn it over to them. So you are right this exercise will only reveal what the administration wants revealed, unless of course they make a mistake.
