There has been buzz among some on this board that CA gubernatorial candidate has "abandoned" the fight against the recall of Gov. Gray Davis. Nothing could be further from the truth:
"We're not abandoning the `no on the recall,'" said Richie Ross, Bustamante's campaign consultant. "But we have to make our case why Cruz Bustamante should be governor. No one is helping us. While we're by ourselves, we've got to explain why Cruz would be a good governor."
There is nothing in this statement that indicates that Bustamante is being an oppotunist or is harming Gov. Davis. It's very simple: Cruz Bustamante's job is make sure that, if the recall does succeed, the right-wing Republicans don't win. He is 100% against the recall and will say so many, many times over the course of the campaign.
The same San Jose Mercury News article causing consternation on this board states:
"Leading Republicans viewed Ross' comments as a concession that Bustamante is distancing himself from the 'No on Recall' campaign."
"'It strikes me that they are abandoning it,' said Republican state Senate leader Jim Brulte."
Isn't it totally clear that it is the Republicans who are trying to drive a wedge between Gov. Davis and Cruz Bustamante? We should not fall for the GOP ploy.
This weekend in Los Angeles, the CA Democratic Party is holding a statewide convention at which it is very widely expected that the party will endorse Cruz Bustamante as a candidate for governor. Then, as a party, we will say:
NO ON RECALL! YES ON BUSTAMANTE!
Let's work together to beat the recall and support our progressive agenda by blocking the far right's attempts to take power. We must support Gov. Davis and Lt. Gov. Bustamante in this fight.
