4. Shout out to a fellow scooter rider.

I got rid of my car and got a Vespa six months ago. It was a great decision. The thing is fun as hell to ride and I spend anout $0.75 a week on gas. I'm hitting about 75 mpg right now. My homeowners policy covers the scooter, so I got rid of that expense. I also don't have to pay property taxes. All told with the savings on car repairs, license fees, gas, insurance etc. I expect the Vespa to pay for itself in about 18 months. Not to mention that I donated my old car to charity and got a nice tax deduction for it.

Screw the tax deduction, get one anyway, it will save you money and reduce pollution.

I skipped much of last week due to slippery streets, but if the streets are dry, I'm ridin'.

Just get some rain gear (very important to break the wind in winter), a good thermal face mask for really cold days, and spend as much on thermal motorcycle gloves as you can afford. I also have some goggles for when it's REALLY cold, but don't often need them.

It's not because of the law. The larger scooters (capable of going over 35 mph) are licensed as motorcycles anyway.

The problem is that my Bajaj tops out around 53 mph. There are much larger scooters. Honda has a massive 'Silver Wing' scooter (with auto transmission) that goes as fast as a Gold Wing motorcycle. There's also a few scooters that go 80 mph easily (there is one from Italy I'm thinking of -- can't remember the name at the moment).

Mostly, I get scared going too fast on little 10 inch wheels. :)

On the other hand, I can get between most cities in Wisconsin on state and county highways. It's often nice to take a more scenic route in any case.

9. In a rational world, you'd get your tax break.

In Bushworld, you get a tax break for buying a plastic, over-large, cheap gas-guzzling modified truck, which is currently called an "SUV".

Why does Bushworld give you this tax break? Because an SUV gets very poor gas mileage, and that makes people buy more, and that makes more profit for the oil companies. And Bush IS the oil companies.

I can't believe how clueless I was about this. I saw these things proliferating more and more (and forget about getting out of any parking spot--SUV's always block the view so you don't know what you are pulling out into.) I couldn't figure out why. It was only recently that I realized that those who buy those things have been getting some really PRINCELY tax deductions. Google it and see--the tax breaks are real.

80 miles per gallon, and a ton of fun to ride. Here in Houston, I can ride it nearly every day and everywhere, and everyone wants to know: "What IS that? Where can I get one?" Hint: go to your local Honda motorcycle dealer. The new ones are about $2000, and cost here about $35 per year for tags, $12 per year for inspection, and $160 per year for insurance, including theft. I just LOVE mine!

last year and bought an E-Ton "Beamer." Cost about $1900, gets 80-90 MPG. Doesn't use it when it's too cold or when streets are wet, but otherwise can go to neighborhood stores, etc. Built a box to fasten behind the seat to haul groceries.

17. Bajaj and Vespa here

I have a 2002 Bajaj Chetak (Yellow) and a 64 Vespa 2 stroke (Red) in the Chicago area. Every time I go to the gas station for a fill up (1.7 gals) and get change for a fiver I smile.

When the Temps top 40 and the ice is gone, I'm on the road.

100 mpg on the Bajaj and 125+ on the Vespa.

FWIW, the 4 stroke Bajaj (really a better engineered 70's era Vespa design) has great environmental numbers too (in case you need another excuse to go out and play with one.)
