30 years later, Chileans reexamine life, death of leader Allende

With all the ink and air about 9/11/01, 9/11/73 is being almost completely ignored.

It was another dark day in American history.

And for the coincidence-minded, check out the number of deaths attributed to America's replacement -

Pinochet dominated Chilean politics for almost three decades, which explains why Allende's record and place in history seldom were discussed. A truth commission found that 3,198 people died in political conflict during Pinochet's rule, from 1973 to 1990.

2. Weren't Henry K. and Bush involved with the coup?

The only real mention of the Allende situation, that I ever noticed in my 100% Public Schooling K-BA, was in a "Latin American Political Studies" class.

Needless to say it still wasn't very self critical of the US.

Allende gets a toast from me this evening.

5. don't forget the nuns in El Salvador

This country has such a bad record, it is a wonder we have any friends in the world. Maybe it is not a matter of friends, but allies out of fear that we will do to them what bullies do to those weaker.

I get so angry at the perversion of what was a good idea into the reality of America today. It sometimes boils over into over-the-line comments and thoughts. What's an idealist to do?

Of course, the answer is, "Keep on keepin' on."

How many of us knew there's a ban on protest in Chile now?

The reason our right-wing Presidents like Nixon and Reagan, and the Bushes have had success in their Latin American adventures is because, as you may have noticed, there has been a complete lack of interest in reporting ANYTHING about other countries in this hemisphere by our own press, for one reason OR ANOTHER. We've had a news blackout for AGES. It's as if those countries don't even exist, until they finally boil over in bloody revolutions.

So after becoming partially "aware" of what happened on and leading up to September 11, 1973 in Chile, (easier to do now more declassified documents have been released) it's possible to see what has happened to create the political structure in place there now, wouldn't you think?

9. Very important stuff...people who don't know about the CIA and it's

real agenda...here is a perfect subject...the overthrow of President Salvador Allende in Chile... and the US backed puppet regime of military right-wing dictator Pinochet, is a parallel to the way the US once supported Saddam Hussein...until they wanted his OIL more.
