Fundamentalists: Actually Wackier Than I Thought!!!
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 09:20 PM by Bouncy Ball
Ok so I'm sick and I was bored earlier today and found this station I didn't know was there (got no satellite or cable here and usually don't bother with TV at all).

I figured out pretty quickly they were hardcore fundies, but here are some of the wackier things I heard them say (and I could only listen for about ten minutes):

1. they said a lot of anti-Catholic stuff--I didn't know they had an anti-Catholic angle, so that was new to me.

2. The European Union (EU) is the anti-Christ. Wow, had no idea. They mentioned this idea several times.

3. The think there are "signs in the moon and stars" that will herald the events of Revelation. Doesn't that sound slightly astrology-like? I thought they didn't go in for that stuff?

4. They said "ozone problems" are one of the signs of the coming rapture. They believe in global warming???

5. If the peace brokered between Israel and Palestine lasts for seven years (I certainly hope so, but don't hold your breath), then it will have been brought about by the anti-Christ, otherwise known as the European Union (WHERE did they get that idea about the EU??? That's just freaky).

6. (This was the one I had to finally turn the channel on) A rise of "pestilence" will herald the end of the world--that pestilence? AIDS. Of course.

:puke:

So buh-bye weird channel.

But I had no idea they thought the EU was the anti-Christ. I thought the anti-Christ had to be a PERSON. What is their beef with the EU? Or are they just crazy and I'm crazier for even attempting to ask questions about their freaky-deaky stuff?

Oh two more things--they advertised a $30 VHS tape (A THIRTY DOLLAR VHS TAPE!!! ANYONE SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT??) called "The Rise of the Second Hitler" about someone who is in power right now who is anti-Semitic. But they wouldn't say who it was, of course.

My biggest thought about all this: if these fucking WACK-jobs have a fucking TV network (and not just one, from what I understand) and we are rational people, WHERE'S OUR NETWORKS, DAMMIT?????

That's what happens. Gullible, unintelligent people sit at home and listen to this crap and start to believe it. It's a fucking CULT, of that I have NO DOUBT. And the fact that the bush administration uses the very same techniques should give every thinking, rational person CHILLS.

2. Sounds like classic Hal Lindsey
My mom was really into his stuff. He did a movie called 'Late Great Planet Earth' and wrote a book. He's got a talk show and all that.

He talked about trilaterists and the EU a lot. For over 20 years we've been on the verge of all this the way he talks. He's a wacko RWer in the extreme.

Just pile that on top of the other tons of scary shit.

42. lol. a radio station here STILL plays reruns in which they claim the USSR
would birth the anti-christ. These are recordings of sermons from the 1980s. I get a kick out of it, as this preacher (Billie Brimm) talks about visiting the USSR and how she is sure the anti-christ is alive and in power there. I guess the radio station doesn't get the irony of playing those old reruns

But they are a fucking cult. They are all about control.

They've ALWAYS been considered loony... way back when, they were called "Bible thumpers" and "Jesus freaks."

The repugs' decision to align with these loonies really super-charged their party, unfortunately.

Among many, many things I object to, bringing these crazies out into the open has done the rest of us a HUGE disservice.

7. #3 is wormwood, a kind of deathstar meteor in Revelation , but you
should read

"Their beliefs are bonkers, but they are at the heart of power
US Christian fundamentalists are driving Bush's Middle East policy"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,1195568,00.html

and

Christian Zionism, Evangelicals and Israel, by Gary M. Burge, Ph.D.
http://www.hcef.org/hcef/index.cfm/ID/159

shows us that there is an error in the theology of these dispensationalists:

""But the most important critique - and here I think we discover the Achilles' heel - is that Christian Zionism is committed to what I term a "territorial religion." It assumes that God's interests are focused on a land, a locale, a place. From a NT perspective, the land is holy by reference to what transpired there in history. But it no longer has an intrinsic part to play in God's program for the world. This is what Stephen pointed to in his speech in Acts 7. The land and the temple are now secondary. God's wishes to reveal himself to the entire world. And this insight cost Stephen his life. Such an understanding is a far cry from the views of Christian Zionists like Ed McAteer who recently commented, "Every grain of sand, every grain of sand between the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, and the Mediterranean Sea belongs to the Jews." Stephen would be alarmed.""

Religion and Ethics Newsweekly
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/week319cover ....
"Impact of Millenium on the Holy Land" shows us the Third Temple prophesies power to effect decisionmaking in the Middle East.
""Mr. SALOMON: ... and gave it to me and said to me, "Take it to Jerusalem for the rebuilding of the house of God."

LAWTON: But there's a problem. The site is already occupied, and has been for more than a millennium, by Muslim holy places. Salomon says they must be removed, but he doesn't like to be asked how.

Mr. SALOMON: Everyone is asking me this question, you know. People like to hear that I would say, "Oh, we shall explode the buildings." And it is not a fair question.""

Also, you may want to read Grace Halsell's "Forcing God's Hand", a pamphlet sized book from a former LBJ speechwriter. Very good insights.

65. It seems they are doing everything possible in order to put the
antichrist inside that Third Temple, don't you think ? And the last time Christians did crusades in the middle east it ended in failure but the results were brilliant...a renaissance in Europe and the West. The 'rethinking' caused by the end of the crusades plus the development of the banking system the Templars set up, well, you can only say God works in strange ways.

Please read also John J. Robinson's books, especially Born in Blood and Dungeon, Fire and Sword on the Knights Templars in the crusades and what became of them.

I recall watching these two kooks really late at night. You know, one of those nights where you can't sleep and have no choice but to suffer through bad television.

Needless to say, it was a torturous experience. Sort of like the sound of nails on a chalkboard and listening to Dubya deliver a speech at the same time. They're just out there, and the fact that they try to make their show resemble a legit news broadcast is pretty laughable.

callers (the brainwashed) to tv and radio shows repeat the same things:

Bush is a man of God

Bush loves God
Bush prays every day
Bush cares about the people
Bush is the finest president we have ever had

This is out and out brainwashing of the population - we really have to recognize this.

22. Two things:
The ozone hole and global warming are completely different phenomena with completely different causes.

End-time cults (now known as Dominionists) have been around since at least the end of the 19th century. If you can convince people the end of the world is imminent, you can get them to do all kinds of cool stuff, like emptying out their bank accounts or handing over their teenage daughters or drinking a nice, refreshing cup of Kool Aid. It's an old scam, but it's a great one. I've often thought the surest way to riches (and a toasty berth in Hell) would be to start a religion.

For one it would take several thousands of lost pathetic people to fall for it and send money. For two we have a "bought" media where the ight puts shows on that don't actually carry a profit in order to spread propaganda.

As far as I'm concerned this country is bat shit nuts and the money men are playing it to the tee.

Found a local religious station where the host was busily expounding on how "One American truck driver has more of a positive effect than all of the artists who have ever lived."

And, that was the best station on the air at the time.

28. The fundies
hate Catholics -- hate. It's one of the signs of a "beyond-redemption" fundie. But, generally, the fundies hate so many groups that it is impossible to keep track. -- As a rough guide, figure that they hate (consciously) just about everybody but themselves.

To recognize a fundie, look for this essential (fundie) point of view: "My way -- or the highway to hell." Many of the fundies would also like to see this point of view become law: "My way -- or the highway to jail." And for the most extreme fundies it is: "My way -- or I want to see you dead."

If you want to rile a fundie up (just to test for "fundiness", for example), starting off with a little Catholic-hating is good. Throw out something like "the whore of Babylon" or "pedophiles". (Mormon-hating also works well, typically.) But even though the fundies are "outing" themselves more and more these days, and doing this in ways that they wouldn't have dared to even a few years back, they still can be somewhat cautious about showing the depths of their hatred. So for a higher probability of getting a rise, wait until you are alone with several fundies (they get reassurance and confidence from numbers) and throw out something about how evil the Muslim "religion" is ("devil-worshiping savages" is good).

Fundies are also big on reducing every issue to one of good (what they think) or bad (what they don't like -- that is, almost everything). They are also very quick to see the devil (devils, the anti-Christ, the monster-of-the-week -- or some other evil ghosty-type thing) behind anything they don't like, or that goes wrong (like when they misplace their car keys).

Lots of the Fundies are also lusting big time for this Rapture thingie -- or for some other form of that Apocalypse thingie. Indeed, implementing domestic and foreign policies (destroy everything and kill people, basically) in order to bring on the "end-times" is a major political (and life) objective for them. (This part I call treason.)

But there are all sorts of fetid little eddies and stinking, stagnant pools in the fundie movement -- and I do not recommend prolonged study if you wish to be able to get out of bed in the morning.

47. Yeah,
and if you throw out the Catholic-hating part and some of the stranger doctrines, it describes a lot of Catholics too. (etc, etc)

What we are up against is a mindset, a mindset of "faith" (believing stuff is true essentially because one wants to) and of: "I am right, that's all there is to it -- applaud and go along --- or be destroyed". Only part of this mindset is "religious", although as a whole it has made a tactic of draping itself in the mantle of "Christianity", "values", "patriotism", etc. (Pretty successfully, I might add.) And yeah, it is all a type of "fundiness" -- believing what you want to and interpreting everything in a way that is consistent with -- and reinforcing to -- this "faith" (no matter how tortured or inconsistent this interpretation may be).

There is no reasoning with or appealing to this sort of (appalling) mindset, and the current crop of these "robots" is operating without scruples or bounds, in a total-war sort of way... And that's what we're up against.

It is best for most people not to dwell on this subject. When you see the world for what it is -- or could quickly become -- it is a place of considerable terrors. Better to dwell on the good things. -- But, of course, one must act.

Regarding the last judgement - what these guys are all trying to bring about. This is from Matthew 25:31-46 that I found on the http://religion-cults.com website.

*******************
"In the words of Jesus himself, in your Last Judgment, you will not be asked: Did you had faith in Christ, or in Buddha, or in Moses?... you shall only be asked: Did you give bread to the hungry, water to the thirsty?... so, come in!. .... You shall not be asked: Were you a Catholic, or a preacher, or a Muslim, or a Hindu?... you shall be asked: Did you clothe the naked, and visit the sick and those in prison?... so, come in!...

You shall not be judged for the "free gifts" you received, but for what you did with those gifts, for the "fruits" you produced!...You shall not be judged for the strong hands you have or for your beautiful face, but for what you did with those hands and face... you shall not be judged for the gift of faith, or the gift of the Bible you received, or for the Church you belong to, but you shall be judged for what you did with that faith, and for what you did with the knowledge you got from the Bible, and for what you did with the help of the Church...

"St. Paul", repeats the same in Rom.5:2-11, and he is still more specific when he ends up saying "for God shows no partiality", he shall judge with the same measure the Christian, and the Muslim, and the Hindu, and the Indians of 5,000 years ago... each one shall be judged by the "fruits" he produced, not by the "gifts" he received, because "there is no partiality with God" (Rom.5:11).

In the "Great White Throne" of Rev.20, the "works" are the only reason mentioned. The faith or the church you belong to are not even mentioned!... "And the dead were judged according to the works, as recorded in the books", and repeats it again: "the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works" (Rev,20:12,13)... the "works", the "works", repeats twice!... the "fruits" made with the free gifts, not for the "gifts"!."

Some pretty powerful citations I'll have to memorize for family night dinner with the fundie-in-laws ;) Thought it might help some other DUers counter the fundies in their lives.

Edited to add: The fundie church I went to as a child was scary as all get out and I would be crying most Sundays all the way home from church. They were talking all about the streets running with blood as high as a horse's bridle, etc. Of course, mom and dad never went to this church, they just sent my bro and myself to Sunday school and Bible school. It effected me so much that I was afraid to not be with my family. I was afraid the EOTW would happen while I was at school. I ended up taking nerve meds from 1st thru 4th grade just to get to school in the morning. Yeah, fundie churches are barrels of laughs.

I've heard lots of Fundies insinuate the Pope was the anti-Christ. And I've heard plenty of Fundies say nasty things about the most kind, divine, peace-loving, generous Catholics.

But it really chaps my husband's butt when they curse Harry Potter.

44. So why do you go back?
Just an honest question. When I was in high school I had a boyfriend whose family was Church of Christ--not quite fundie, but pretty darn close. He hated it and I didn't care for his family's church, but the only way they'd let us date is when we attended church functions. So we'd slip out the back and sit in a church bus and talk and maybe kiss. Not to give anyone any ideas.

The youth service was just HORRID. There was no standing that.

52. Let's see, maybe I can explain in detail
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 11:38 PM by independentchristian
1. they said a lot of anti-Catholic stuff--I didn't know they had an anti-Catholic angle, so that was new to me.

Catholic church is believed by a lot of bible-believing Christians to be the harlot in purple or scarlet that the Bible talks about. Also, the Catholic church is not "true christianity" in the opinions of most "Protestants" and that should come as no surprise if you understand history.

2. The European Union (EU) is the anti-Christ. Wow, had no idea. They mentioned this idea several times.

The EU threw out God in it's new Constitution, a move that will no doubt make most of you happy. They didn't even acknowledge their heritage. It is not regarded as the "antichrist", but the revived Roman Empire, and the body by which the antichrist will rise to power.

3. The think there are "signs in the moon and stars" that will herald the events of Revelation. Doesn't that sound slightly astrology-like? I thought they didn't go in for that stuff?

Signs and wonders in the heavens? The Bible uses those words, but they are not talking about watching the stars.

4. They said "ozone problems" are one of the signs of the coming rapture. They believe in global warming???

And the earth's elements melted away with fervent heat. A lot of GOPers refuse to recognize "global warming," but if you look a prophecies a lot of them can point to man-caused incidents some of which can result from global warming. Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.

5. If the peace brokered between Israel and Palestine lasts for seven years (I certainly hope so, but don't hold your breath), then it will have been brought about by the anti-Christ, otherwise known as the European Union (WHERE did they get that idea about the EU??? That's just freaky).

The peace brokered between Israel and the Palestinians doesn't last for 7 years. It lasts for 3 years, I think, and then things get bad. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:3 - "For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape."

The EU will be the final global superpower and soon, mainly because Bush is destroying the United States' position as that. Of course someone in the know can see this occuring right now with the rise of the euro against the dollar and the growing influence of the EU. Well, much to most of your pleasure, the EU will be the superpower soon. The antichrist is then going to rise up within the ranks of the EU, maybe as their new President or whichever country is rotated into the Presidency. If the antichrist is Prince Charles as some people think, then I don't know how he would assume power over the EU, although the EU is the revived Roman Empire. The antichrist will broker the peace treaty between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Last time I checked, seat #666 within the EU Parliament is still vacant, although seats #665 and #667 are filled, but that was months ago.

6. (This was the one I had to finally turn the channel on) A rise of "pestilence" will herald the end of the world--that pestilence? AIDS. Of course.

Incorrect. I can tell you are paraphrasing it. The rise of many pestilences are just one sign of "the beginning of sorrows", along with earthquakes in divers places, wars and rumors of wars, etc.

If it's any comfort to you the cure for AIDS will be discovered. It probably already has been but the government is not releasing it yet. With the looming oil crisis, anything that can kill off a lot of people on the planet without a lot of work or money like AIDS and abortions are not things the governments of the world are privy to put an end to right now. The catch is that after the cure for AIDs is discovered, something much worse than AIDS will sweep across the planet killing millions.

That was a "prophecy" included within another prophecy in 1994 that said that Bill Clinton would be re-elected because of something that he had to do. This was right around the time that Whitewater broke and all of these antiClinton people were coming out of the woodworks trying to get Bill in serious trouble and all of the talking heads were saying that if he wasn't in impeached during the Whitewater scandal, there was no way he'd be re-elected. It didn't work, he was re-elected like the prophecy said that he would be, and then they tried to remove him again with Monica and it still didn't work. There was also a "prophecy" in 1998 that said that there would be terrorist attacks that would be so horrific that they would "shake" people. Then 9/11 occured and they were interviewing a woman in New York and she said "I can't stop shaking."

God is real, prophecies are real. The cure for AIDS is out there, but I doubt the government is going to release it until they find out about this monster disease, although they probably won't warn the public about it.

Good night, I'll be curious to see your responses. And no, I don't belong to a cult, and I don't watch any of those shows either, duh. :hi:

1) The majority opinion here is that any reference to "God" or any "Deity" really has no place in politics? Am I wrong? I know that I'm not and since I'm not, then the EU not recognizing "God" or their "Christian heritage" in their Constitution would be something that the majority opinion here would support.

"Well, much to most of your pleasure, the EU will be the superpower soon.

2)A few months ago, on one thread about the EU and the increasing influence of it because of the euro and other things, the majority opinion, or at least the most vocal opinion on that thread was how great of a thing that would be if the EU was calling the shots on the international scene. Hey, that's what was said, that's what was supported, why wouldn't I repeat it if it was said?

Sounds like you don't consider yourself to be a person who belongs here.

I am in the "minority" and I love being in the minority. That's why I consider myself to be a person who belongs here because people who understand "both sides" are necessary. And I'm impartial. I can't stand the Bush administration or most of what the EU stands for.

Also for supposedly not watching any of these shows or not belonging to them, you sure know enough to know seat # 666 hasn't been filled.

I also know about peak oil, the Patriot Act, PNAC, fascism, cronyism, progressivism, populism, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

You think I learned about that by "watching television" or attending their meetings, i.e. being "one of them"? No, I read and research everything that I'm interested in, that includes what's going on inside of the European Union.

As a Christian who firmly believes in a rigid seperation of Church and State, I think taking God out of the EU Constitution is wonderful. I don't think we should be messing with our Constitution, but since the EU is putting together a new Constitution, they might as well not even start with the whole God in politics bs we have over here.

Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 01:08 AM by usregimechange
Christian Conservatives wanting their religion established into government are wanting welfare. They are welfare queens and kings. Promoting or being critical of religion is the job of the people not the government. Church and State seperation depends on the absense of governmental interference in religious matters and these damn welfare kings and queens are too lazy to get out their and promote their beliefs themselves!

Yes--they have them, too. There's some crap in the Bible about how, I don't know, something about how certain people can't be poisoned by being bitten by poisonous snakes, or something like that. So they have these bizarre backwoods fundie types in the wilds of the deep south, and they handle poisonous snakes as part of their "religious observance". Remember, come the rapture the konservative fundies have to convert us heathens to their version of christianity and kill those that refuse to be born again in their religion. But none of the konservative fundies has made it clear which one of their creeds is THE ONE TRUE FAITH that will survive the bloodbath.

They also believe that the U.N. wants to occupy America, and they distrust that organization. They also hate Janet Reno for attacking Randy Weaver, (right wing radical - Christian Identity) and David Koresh (right wing radical - Christian Identity spin off). Many sympathize with McViegh and understand his desire to seek revenge for Weaver / Koresh. They generally support the NRA, and are strong supporters of the 2nd amendment. Many have a large gun collection, and are "survivalists" believing that the end of the world is near. Participation in the Malta movement is reasonably common.

They are certainly different than most of us, but a whole lot like the average conservative republican.

79. Don't they also predict they will be mislead in the end times?
Seems like they say something like that...lots of false teachers and certainly the anti- Christ.

Think about this. They are always on their toes to spot anyone, anything that might show some signs of being a false messiah. A fraud. A potential "Anti-Christ". They would never fall for anyone or anything like that because "they" are aware and Jesus and G-d take a personal interest in their success. They won't get fooled, just misguided naive non-biblically rooted Christains who aren't on their toes will be deceived, not them. They are rapture ready.

I wonder what their head scout, Tim LaHaye, was thinking when he wrote this letter.

Nothing can slip by these fine "Christians" they are on their toes...
wonder if they read this classic series by Robert Parry, wonder if it would give them pause.

No one will slip anything past Falwell, he's on his toes.

No one will slip anything past these fine conservatives, they have the truth and their leaders are on their toes.

I mean the right, the religious right are on their toes...

You can read an outline of how alert the conservative movement is here. No one is fooling them.

80. Yes, the Anti-Catholic stuff.
At times it sure seems that any misdeed by the Catholic church warrants national headlines for weeks, and the most depraved actions of a protestant Pentecostal wind up on page 9 of the local news only.

Recently, the principal of The "Agape" Christian charter school was arrested for his sexual encounters with his young subjects. The Detroit news was the only outlet (besides the small local paper) that carried the story, primarily because it happened in one of its suburbs.

The conflict between the Irish protestant Republicans and the Catholic Democrats in Ireland might be an extreme case of the same ilk.
