I had my own "monkey encounter" of the first kind tonight.

At my son's band concert, the music director stopped the performance to point out a man in the audience who had just returned from Iraq yesterday and this was the first time he had seen his son in a year. All well and good, I clapped and left it at that.

Behind me was a 35 year old beer belly who was standing and whooping. That 3-hour old Budweiser smell with a pack of stale Marlboros is so welcome in a high school gym. Anyway, the band director then said the band had prepared a "special number" in honor of him and our "men in Iraq". Now I was getting queasy...I know many of our young men and women now in Iraq don't want to be there and will need our support more than the Vietnam generation.

On the program were the words to Lee Greenwood's "Proud To Be An American" or whatever it's called...and asked people to stand and sing along. To my surprise only a handful of people did that...in fact, for the first half of the song, all I heard was the band. That was before Mr. Cealis got up and started to attempt something resembling singing.

I gave him a look and he says to me "what's wrong, you don't support this war". I looked at him and said "I don't support immoral pillage"...he did a double take. Then I followed with "I'll be here when your son is shipped off to Iraq in a few years...and what will you think of your war then?" The group around me applauded. He sat down...and next thing I knew he had left.

23. I Felt Very Strange...Still Do

The fact so few sang and the mood in that gym was very somber made me feel I wasn't alone, but also that there was so much silence going on here...so few in this predominately Repugnican area would dare to speak up other than in private.

I am tempted to contact the Music Director, who I know and he's a good teacher (just a bit of a show-off on occasions) and his intentions were positive...just his taste in music always sucks...LOL.

The school district is facing a major tax referndum in a couple weeks. If this fails, $3.6 million will be slashed from next year's budget and the music program will all but cease to be. I'm working with parents (many Democrats) to get the refendum passed, so making waves about this would create a needless distraction.

I sense that if there was ever a time the term "silent majority" applied, it's now. Many of us who are trying to speak out are the targets of ruthless supression and those who would like to get intimidated. Strength and truth be with us all!
