Letter to the Editor - Gay public affection offensive to readers
Hey folks - saw this letter to the editor. :puke: Thought I would share this awful letter to the editor and had such a visceral response to it. Please help me inundate the paper that published this (The Penn State Daily Collegian) with letters (can be submitted at http://www.collegian.psu.edu/opinions/opinions.asp).

If you care to contact the writer you can do so at cek181@psu.edu

Letter to the Editor
Gay public affection offensive to readers
Thank you Daily Collegian for providing such a wonderful front-page picture yesterday.

There's nothing I look forward to more than seeing a bunch of queers kissing in public. It definitely made my day. How about publishing pictures and stories about real people that actually matter for a change?

There are plenty of individuals and groups at Penn State who are good, honest people, striving every day to make a positive difference, especially this week with Thon coming up.

These are the people who should represent Penn State on the cover of the Collegian, instead of a group of people who are nothing short of disgusting and pathetic.

Chris Kovalchick
USG Academic Assembly senator College of Agricultural Sciences

5. "College of Agricultural Sciences"?
Aren't there some old jokes about "animal husbandry"?

Personally, I'm not fond of excessive PDA; the phrase "get a room" comes to mind. But a kiss is just a kiss. The gender of the participants doesn't squick me. (Would he have had the same response to a couple of pretty ladies getting it on?)

An especially telling phrase: "real people that actually matter."

12. "real people that actually matter."
yeah - that is chilling :scared:

my first thought was to respond in some way that suggested that the author was not one of the "real people that actually matter.", but that would be stooping.

I just don't know what to say to a person who thinks this way, except perhaps "EFF YOU"

14. no
He was a West Chester University grad.

WCU, however, is a member of the Pennsylvania State Higher Education Assn. (or something like that).

i.e. - it is a Pennsylvania sponored state school; but it is not part of the Pennyslvania State University.

22. But Gannon's Bio (Talon?) didn't say West Chester, it did say
"Pennsylvania State University system graduate." Hence, my quip. Truthfully, I thought the "university system graduate" spoke volumes about not want to actually name your college/university. Puffing, indeed.

29. Yeah as a Penn State Graduate my BS detector
My bullshit detector went way high. Especially knowing Penn State has one of the largest Alumni association in the county. I think Washington DC has most PSU Alumnus per capita than any other city. I'm sure implying he was a PSU graduate got him some access here and there about town. I now Sanctimonious Sanatorium would almost always personally answer my emails when they came from my PSU email address even if it was a quick I don't agree with you but thanks for writing fellow Penn Stater type reply.

17. lol - don't be too surprised....
PSU is public for one thing.... There's no RTP near Happy Valley for another.... It doesn't require that literally ALL 40k kids be from the boonies (tho the vast majority certainly are)... That front page wouldn't even fly in Pgh - which is substantially more "cosmopolitan" than Happy Valley...

I take it you haven't spent much time in PA? It takes 2 to add value to a conversation - 1 to give it, the other to receive it....

30. 21 years growing up in PA, 5 years away, another 2 here and counting in PA
including 4 years at PSU, the other 19 in Pittsburgh. I must have been the exception at PSU: my crew certainly didn't have any issues like this, and with the exception of the Willard Preacher and the occasional frat rat, I didn't note this much hostility among most folks

As to Pittsburgh, again it is not cosmopolitan, but run that page there and the people bitching about it probably won't have city addresses or even 412 area codes. Or perhaps i see the whole place differently as I spend all my time in Oakland, Downtown, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill...

Sorry about the value comment - took it a bit personal as an alum + i was already fired up by that clown's letter.

19. Given the visceral loathing expressed in that letter ...
I'd say "Chrissie" was just pissed 'cause "she" could come up with the $200 necessary to hook up with that hot military stud Jeff Gannon!

Seriously, though, when I read a letter like that I can't help but think of Shakespeare's line: "Methinks she doth protest too much."

31. I wonder if he is really into Ag. Science
or if he is one of those people who can't make main campus, so they apply to the Ag School (which has a large quota of seats to fill - as a land grant school - and thus will let a lower quality student in than would get into, say, engineering) and then transfers to another major.... Though, i thought he was an upperclassman, perhaps no other major took him.

35. As a gay man who knows plenty of gay personals sites
all over the web, you don't know how tempting it is to post that pic along with a ad like: "Slutty bottom farmboy, 3" cut, seeks first time gay experience with a non-blood-relative. Must have own sheep costume."

26. Probably in front of the Willard Bldg.
It'd be better to do the kiss in front of Willard Bldg.

any PSU graduate should understand why the Willard Bldg. There a Fred Phelps wannabe that preaches on the steps of that Building ever day. He has done it for years. I'm sure little closeted chrissy there in that letter is one of Gary the Willard Building Preacher's disciples.

24. Poor Mr. Kovalchick. His last name confused him.
All through grade school the kids used to call him Chick, Chicky, Chickman.... He thinks calling people a bunch of queers and studying animal husbandry can restore his last vestige of manhood.

32. The usual antics. I've seen worse recently.
When my friends were tired and cuddling on an airplane, a woman said to her husband "I can't believe they let gays on airplanes!"

And of course, there was that HONK IF YOU HATE GAYS banner on the twelfth street bridge in Austin. (thanks to all the honkies too)

If I don't actually matter, then why does this guy care if I hold my sweetie's hand? Ignore me! I'm invisible!
