IF...there is a ...DRAFT
Our plan if there is a draft:

With Iran or Syria in the monsters sights now, and hell on earth in Iraq, we will not open the draft or selective service notice. We will put it right back into the mail box. We will do one of two things, send our son to Sweden or he can go straight to the Air Force recruiter.

And we were in the military.

1. I agree
My husband and I were both in the military. If they start up the draft, my 17 year old is either out of the country (I'm considering Ireland) or its to the Air Force or the Navy. His armed forces exam scores were VERY high. (compulsory at his highschool) He should have no trouble getting into the USAF or USN.

2. Well, I dont see any real support or need for a draft.
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 11:04 PM by nickshepDEM
But if the draft ever was re-instated, I would immediatley run down the the recruiting office and sign up for the the USAF or USN. By the way, Im 20 years old and the oldest son in my family, so Im prime meat for a draft.

7. No, Im not joking. Congress wont vote Yes to re-instate the draft.
They will cut and run in Iraq before they re-instate the draft. Bush and Co. are to smart to do it. If they seriously propose re-instating the draft it will cost the GOP 20+ seats in the house and senate and the Presidency for at least 12 years. They aint that stupid.

29. You could say the same about Social Security "reform".
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 02:58 AM by Stirk
Six months ago I would've agreed with you. But look what's happening inside the Republican Party these days. Privatizing Social Security is a very unpopular idea, but the Bush Administration wants to do it anyway. Alot of reluctant Republican congressmen are toeing the line, even though it will very likely mean they'll lose the next election.

I think the Bush Administration will do whatever they feel like doing, and damn the rest of the party.

15. If there isn't a draft, and we stay in Iraq for the long term, then the
existing troops there are going to experience post traumatic stress syndrome even worse than the Vietnam vets. Too few people are being asked to work overtime in an insane environment.

8. My son is 21. Just don't open the notice and if your parents get
the notice tell them not to tell you of its existence. Just have them tell you its time to go to plan B or what ever you agree to signal it.
But if this happens we will just tell him its time for a vacation in Europe somewhere. Since we've never been it works.

will be in the offing for March, if they want to get mobilized for a campaign in Syria or Iran.

I figure the draft will start on the day after.

WHEN there's a Bush-Draft, potential draftees
better join the navy.

You could not dream of a safer detail right now.

14. I wouldn't be so sure about that bud.........
I've read this article that says that Iran has Sunburn missles from China which would be targeting US ships and if Israel bombs Iran's nuclear sites Iran is going to target US soldiers in Iraq.
Do these boobs ever learn.
Yeah I know stupid question!!!

12. Can they transfer members of the Navy and Air Force over to the Army
in order to cover the troop shortfall? The Navy and Air Force were busy during the "major combat operations" part of the war, but they aren't anymore.

It would piss everyone off, but probably not as much as reinstating the draft. And you would have to retrain everyone.

My grandfather(RIP) was Air Force in WWII and was transfered into the 1st infantry (The Big Red One) around the time they hit Europe.

So yes they can transfer you or at least they did back in WWII.

19. When my dad joined the Army Air Corps, in the late 40's I think,
there was no Air Force. The Air Force was created later the Army and the Air Force are what were created out of the Army air Corps. My dad went Air Force when they divided. Its still not like the Navy/Marine Corps where the Marines are based on Navy ships and Navy Corpsmen and Doctors serve in Marine units.

20. Maybe my grandfather was Army Air Corp.
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 12:14 AM by Wheaty
It's possible he referred to it as Air Corp and I misinterpreted it as Air Force.

Either way I can tell you he was not at all happy about it.

He is the man that taught me to be staunchly anti war.

He never talked about WWII. Only a few times did he mention WWII and only to pass on wisdom to me about the dangers of war.

Funny thing how it's always the people who have seen real war are the ones who are the most anti war.

Well, they aren't being transfered out of their service, but Air Force units are performing security duties in Iraq under Army command.

'Combat Truckers' drive into history

by Airman Justin Weaver
354th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

Eleven Icemen redefined the Air Force vehicle operations career field while making history as part of a team directly tasked by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Deployment Order to fill critical shortfalls in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

These Iceman Team members represent the first Air Force unit to serve under Army command since World War II.

“Our original tasking was to drive the convoy trucks throughout Iraq to forward operating bases,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Von Dollen, 354th Logistic Readiness Squadron vehicle operator/dispatcher. He said the mission soon changed to providing convoy security.

The Army has primary responsibility for providing convoy security escort in Iraq, but when the demand for its services exceeded capability, the Air Force responded to the call for help.

...won't work.

But you may indeed want to look into the various options available. Besides leaving the country, there's also Conscientous Objector status.

27. A draft would be rejected.
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 01:02 AM by dyermaker
There isn't enough jail cells to hold the amount of people that would dodge a draft. I bet even half of the draft age persons who voted for Bush wouldn't go.

A war with Iran and Syria would have to be handled by the airforce and navy; If you know what I mean.
