Thanks to Eisenhower, a united Vietnam didn't have elections in 1956, because Ho Chi Minh would have won. The resulting American-led war cost millions of Vietnamese lives, and at the end, Vietnam was still communist. (Though Ho died before seeing victory.)

Thanks to Eisenhower, Guatamala and Iran saw their progressive democratic governments overthrown, and hundreds of thousands of deaths since, and a world of geopolitical hurt for the US, can be attributed to the coups over the years.

Thanks to Eisenhower, Cuban policy is what it is today.

Yeah, nice "military-industrial complex" mea culpa farewell speech, but what the fuck did he do about when he could have done something about it, but watch it grow?

... better articulate our beliefs, and stand up for the principles that traditionally have united Americans. Those who are willing and able to join us, will. Those who can't or won't... forget 'em.

Trying to "win over" republicans is a poor strategy, in my view, when there is a far greater pool of disaffected non-voters out there, hankering for a message and a candidate to inspire them.

Everyone here has criticisms of one sort or another. That's what distinguishes us from the freepiots -- we're able to cast a critical eye on ourselves and our candidates, rather than wallowing in party-worship.

True, some here take it too far or lose a sense of proportion sometimes, but criticizing a Dem does not equal support for Bush, not in a direct sense at any rate. Believe me, you'll know when DU hates someone! There'll be no doubt!

THE BREEDING GROUND FOR VILE NASTY REPUKES.

I have what is probably the WORST state representative in Austin EVER and he's a republican through and through.

He wants to make it legal to bring guns into schools, churches, and hospitals. He has NEVER explained why, but read on for possible motivations.

He has voted against funding schools and textbooks a record SEVENTEEN TIMES. He has NEVER voted yes for school funding or books. Never.

He got a measure passed to cut out poor womens' access to birth control in this state.

He owns a private prison consulting/building business on the side, as well as a gun shop and a couple of gun ranges.

(Think about that---wouldn't it behoove him to keep up a nice stable prison population given what he does for a living on the side? That is disgusting.)

He was BUSTED running his private business out of his taxpayer-funded offices in Austin.

I could go on and on but you get the idea, hopefully by now. Some of the WORST repukes come from right here.

Ok, Well I live in MA, so all of our R's ( with the exception of that lying bastard govenor) are usually moderate.

But read my further post- the party will change, be it in 2 years or 20, and at that time, you have to be willing to see how EACH party changes.

I have watched these nasty creatures carve up Texas with glee in the redistricting, like kids in a candy store.

One Dem now has a district that cuts a one mile wide swath through EIGHTEEN counties, from south Austin to the COAST OF TEXAS.

Yeah. They did that hoping to oust him and forcing him to campaign in that many counties. He managed to barely win. But most Dems were victims of the repukes redistricting in Texas.

They will not rest until they have it all. Playing fair is NOT in their vocabulary, compromise is a concept lost on them.

Thus I oppose them with everything I have and at every turn. Their policies and practices are HARMFUL to our country. And I'm making an understatement.

who have only been saying "OK" for the past few years.

No is a BIG step in the right direction and NOT inconsistent at all with what Dean says. One of Dean's MAJOR points is that we must oppose the republicans.

You might want to go brush up on what Dean says before you go around lecturing Democrats.

As long as the republican party, as it is now, stands for the things it stands for now, there is NO WAY I would vote for any of them.

In the case you mentioned, you failed to remember there are ALWAYS other options. They are called third parties, and I don't want to hear any insulting ass bullshit about wasting my vote. It's MY vote and I HAVE cast it for third parties before. I have never voted for a repuke in my life, not even for city dog catcher.

Why?

I've never, I repeat NEVER, known a good one running for office. Period. I live in Texas, and have all my life.

The last time halfway decent republicans ran for office, I was too young to vote for them.

No, they don't get my vote. Ever. It would take MASSIVE reform within their party and a complete change of their party platform and ideals for that to happen.

We have NO problem holding our own accountable. If Kerry had been elected, I was prepared to be watching him like a fucking hawk. My party, to put it bluntly, is not made up of blind followers.

Where we ARE very united is in our opposition to the republicans. And that, as Martha Stewart would say, is a good thing.

How many failures to defeat the neo-cons should we accept in order to allow these "good" republicans the time to take their party back, assuming that is anyone's agenda in the first place? How much more damage to our country and what it stands for will that involve? I can't speak for you, but from where I'm standing, we've already waited too long to stop them. If there are republicans who don't agree with the direction their party is going, they need to start fighting now or they are traitors through complicity.

I can't begin to describe how much I disagree with the republican party platform and how much I agree with the Dem one.

It is pretty much as simple as that, when you get right down to it.

to disagree. There was a time when I could vote for a moderate Republican, but not now. It seems for many Republicans,it's the party before the country. How could they go along with all the things currently being done to this country. Civil rights are being eroded,severe attacks on the poor, greater and greater wealth for the rich while many more citizens sink into deep poverty, attempts to stack the court with right wing judges, attempts to discriminate against homosexuals, attempts to get rid of separation of church and state, manipulation of the press. It seems to me at some point, if you love your country you say I can no longer go along with this. It's sad to see how the Republican party has changed. I can't think of any Republican that I could vote for. I don't hate Republicans but it is hard to respect people who would support the ideas some in the Republican party are putting forth. Some of those ideas will have a lasting negative effect on our country, IMHO. I think a few years down the road, people are going to wake up and wonder how this was allowed to happen.

They're afraid to acknowledge it, failing to realize that anger is a natural -- and sensible -- response to the horrible things the repukes are doing to our country. It's what we do with our anger that matters -- and what we allow it to do to ourselves, as you've pointed out.

I see hate as much the same as anger -- it's just an emotion, and we can use it to guide us just as we do love and happiness. But that's largely semantics, at this point... hate, anger, anger, hate. Just nouns. We all know what we're up against, and we're all finding ways to fight it, no matter which noun we choose.

There is another point that may be worthwhile to consider though. The new republicans, you know, the "fad victims", those with only 2 brain cells. They only know how to do one thing well, and that is to become another fish in the school.

Well, one day they may be schooling for us.

Religious people are taught to "accept things by faith alone". This basically means that you can sell them bullshit without the inconvenience of providing proof. The bushtapo employees this same principle to their policy. This is the mortar in the dam which keeps the truth from running out.

Ya just never know which news story might provide that first little crack in their mud. The little fishie's mind is opened up a little more for the next news story. Soon they begin to question, and to do that requires some proof. Whoopsie, so much for faith; we are learning to make decisions on a different basis.

I am looking for a point of erosion in their dam which will naturally take more of their backfill with it as the truth begins to leak out. Ya just cant tell which story will do that. One example, the farmers are pissed because shrub cut their cash flow. The farmers dam may be starting to leak. Maybe, as a group, they too will begin to develop critical thinking skills. Maybe they will mindlessly school for us? They will mindlessly school for someone. It is their nature.

But the loudmouths, flag wavers, Limbaugh clones, Fuck 'em all. I have to agree. Let them get screwed by the same administration that they thought would NOT screw them because they cast the "patriotic and moral" vote.

At the risk of getting banned from DU, I feel I should provide some perspective. As a former repug (Reagan, BushI), I have observed that a large number of them (voters, that is, not the administration) are acually very nice people.. but very, very, very clueless. It takes kind of mental evolution to break free of the conservative mind-set. The ability to see reality isn't easy for a lot of people, or even possible for some.. but hate-talk isn't exactly going to lure people left of the center line.

Once upon a time, in this land not so far away, there was such a thing as a moderate republican. They weren't all that rare. I know its hard to imagine, since now they're as common as a bigfoot sighting, but really, they did exist.

They were reasonable people, who believed in science, education and some even believed in a woman's right to choose. They were republican, because they didn't like big intrusive government, but they did like government and felt many programs were important and successful. They just wanted the money to be spent wisely.

Then one day, these people known as moderate republicans were attacked by the religious right....just for being different. It started innocently, with the usual level of ridicule in politics, but then it mushroomed out of control, with orders of conformity or extinction. The moderate is now virtually extinct. They keep a few in cages, and they let them out of the cages at election time. They get paraded around with the other republicans so that people think they're more abundant than they are. But then they get locked back up again, and they are hunted, even in their cages. This way they will get learned helplessness. This is what they tried to do to the democrats too. For a while it worked, but anger and resilience is building.

Unlike the moderate republican, the democrats are not an enagered species.

So, to help the democrats...I have joined the party, made contributions to the DNC and move-on....I have even joined the ACLU.

I do not want the democrat to become as rare as the moderate republican. I want this tale to end happily ever after.

Do you not realize there are unintended consequences to evoking such emotions in people? Do you really want that? Is that your goal? Seems foolish to me to want to have hatred directed at you or think that if people hate you you are then doing something right?

Really, this whole "you're either with us or against us" shit was invented by Republicans like Bush. Do we really have to be like them? I'm really sick of it. I really, really am. I wish life was this simple. It's not. It's really not. As Kerry told Bush, (paraphrasing) things are not black and white.

Plus, we're not going to get the majority moderate vote by declaring hatred for Republicans. I hate it that they do it to us, but think of how much power we could have if the moderate majority caught ONLY their hatred for us and saw that most of us weren't the same the other way around.

How many "moderates" are there left who haven't come over to our side already? And if so, they know EXACTLY why we hate Bush and the Republicans. The hardcore Bush supporters on another board I frequent are always pulling this "moderate" crap on me too, i.e. "Don't you think you're alienating THE MODERATES with all this negativity and hatred?" I ask them if they've ever voted for Clinton or ANY Democrat, and that usually shuts them up right there!

One thing that turned me off of conservatives so much was their idea that anybody who wasn't like them was the enemy. I sometimes see them as people who could get us killed without meaning to. After all, if we're traitors to the country for opposing a war and the death penalty is legal, then why wouldn't we be executed? It makes sense to me. They don't realize what the hell they're saying when they say stuff like that.

Anyway, saying the same thing about them the other way around and saying that they need to be "dealt with" makes me have flashbacks.

I'm a little worried that leftists are becoming like conservatives. The one thing I love about leftists is that they're not conservatives.

I simply have no interest in republicans. Those I have met have been simple-minded and full of self-interest. They've come off arrogant, pompous, and ....really like people who have experienced no loss in their life, so they have no comprehension of human loss. I may be wrong here, but this is my personal experience of dealing with that foul breed.

The bottom line is, republicans I have spoken with tend to be mean-spirited. I've tried to understand, I've tried to heal. At this point, fuck it. The bastards have a sickness they are trying to spread around the world, and that sickness may very well destroy our world. I value their lives, but the value of their lives does NOT supercede that of my children.

Fuck those rat-bastards until they come to their senses. If they can't do that one small thing, just valuing their neighbor, let 'em die. I'll bring flowers to the maggots that eat their flesh.
