My sincere apology for not responding earlier to your e-mails. I have been out of the country and finally am getting a chance to catch up with my mail and e-mails. Obviously, we neglected to do anything with the Gannon story when it broke. Hopefully, there will be an opportunity for us to catch up with it, perhaps in a column. I can assure you there was no effort to protect the Bush administration -- on the contrary, our editorial page has been tough on Bush. There also was no conspiracy to keep the Gannon item out of the paper. If you could see how things work around here, you'd be amazed that we even get out a paper every day. 6. Publishers typically call the shots

I hear that the Plain Dealer editor was ordered to hold his nose and write an endorsement for Bush--the entire editorial board was overruled by the publisher.

The editorial staff was set to endorse Kerry, but the head honcho demanded that they endorse Bush.

So they decided to run the "non-endorsement", pointing out that they were not endorsing anybody because of orders from "above".
