I think the coverage of Guckertgate is sexist
Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 04:25 PM by senseandsensibility
Think about it for a moment. If a woman was a high priced call girl with a web page full of salacious nude photos and she had been "working" as a while house correspondent with no training in journalism.....

The media would be more than comfortable showing the photos, with some portions blacked out, calling her a prostitute, and playing up the fact that she has no journalistic background or training. It would be assumed that she was an empty headed fluffbrain who had been set up by a sugar daddy.

Because Gannon is male he gets the benefit of the doubt on his intelligence, and people are willing to believe that he could be a journalist with no training or experience. The mostly male reporters covering this are uncomfortable talking about a fellow male in sexual terms, so he gets a pass.

2. ditto that!
what you said.
Call girls are assumed to have no brains.
Call boys are devious blackmailers.

we would see/hear everything ad nauseum. The MSM is trying to kill this, that's why you get incomplete coverage

5. Very good points.
And I don't believe that a female prostitute would have been granted interviews on the "serious" news programs. They would have had dozens of male "experts" to talk about her on those programs and then left any interviews to Maury Pauvich or Jerry Springer.

I just recently changed my user name. I wouldn't have made it through the past four years without DU!

9. I don't think so. We're dealing with the MSM here, and their
problem isn't Guckert's sexuality, or his profession. It's his politics. He's got that all important "R" after his name and that makes him completely off limits.

After all, the MSM has no problem with shirtless males on newscasts about sports. Why would they have any problem with that shot of Guckert in his tighty whities and dog tags, finger poised coyly at his mouth? There's nothing obscene about that picture. It's precious.

If a madam with a house full of underage prostitutes got busted in the WH press corps, they'd be just as reluctant to cover the story.

They got their monopolies from the GOP, and no GOPer can do wrong.

right wing bias and hypocrisy and sexism. I don't see it as an all or nothing situation. However, the media would be more comfortable reporting about a FEMALE prostitute and treating her with disdain. After all, every reporter that I have heard covering this is male. They are squeamish about male sexuality and acting on their sexist beliefs at the same time that they serve their GOP masters.

10. wrong, this is not about gender
The only reason he's getting a pass is because the US media is corrupt and is trying to protect mass-murderer Bush, as they would protect this abomination even if he were a female.

11. At least it is still being covered -- for whatever the reason.
If Gannon has fluffy blond hair . . .

The media needs to be pounded for NOT catching -- for not trying to find out who this guy was.

Someone needs to search the DU archives because I remember questions about the dumb Freeper in the WH press corps months and months ago. I remember one of the early DU posts -- about how the Freepers now have one of their own in the WH press corps -- because he had been active on the Freep board.

If it was so darned apparent that this idiot was a stupid jerk -- why did the rest of the press corps give the guy a free ride?

Double standards -- for Democrats and republics -- and for men and women.

15. Bingo
The male pundits would be all over this if the prostitute was female. They are horribly embarrassed that a male can be a prostitute. I don't think one MSM outlet has shown the nude pictures or even the ones with the tighty whites. Yet how many times did they show Janet. Non-stop.

17. It's also about implications
Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 05:46 PM by robertarctor
If Jeff Gannon were Heidi Fleiss, then the implications of sexual congress with her would not be so radioactive to the public. Big deal: Politician pays hooker/dominatrix for specialized sex therapy.

But because Gannon's likeness has been found on websites where he advertised the services of being a USMC drill sergeant-type "top," the implications of any connections to a president who was just re-(s)elected by campaigning on an anti-gay platform, or to someone else high up in his administration, are too horrible (for some) to contemplate.

20. It's true - men are generally far more interested in.....
.... women's sexuality than other mens'....

I'm not sure *that part* of the issue deserves to be called sexist, tho there is certainly an unfairness about it.....

The other part you mention tho - about people being open to the idea of gannuckert being a genuine journalist, where they wouldn't be in the case of a woman - yah, that's pure sexism....

Because Gannon is some guy the media hems and haws around the whole thing (God forbid they should call him a whore)

If this were a woman prostitute it would be a WHOLE different ball game.
