Edited on Sun Feb-20-05 07:51 PM by Stop_the_War
personally I don't care what these tapes reveal. I think it's a distraction from the real scandal. We all know Bush was a drug addict, marijuana, booze, cocaine. the american people need to know about gannon. NOW.

has a cartoon about Gannon in today's editorial section.

3. Maybe because you're not looking?
I saw it today on CNN. There were a couple of stories in today's NY Times. It was covered yesterday in the Washington Post and LATimes. Others here are reporting other examples of coverage.

It's silly to expect it to be non-stop 24-hour coverage of Gannongate. As of right now, it's a minor scandal and nothing new was revealed today.

17. If he was the king of POP we might hear a little more don't you think?
Why is it silly to expect non-stop coverage? I was barraged with Lewinsky for God knows how long. Peterson, Jackson, Stewart, Letourneau and who could forget OJ? There was a whore in the White House - let in under a false name, without proper credentials and nobody cares. Seems the only person fanning this story is Gannon himself. Let's hope he keeps it up.

20. Because
right now it's a third-rate scandal involving the White House press office. It may turn into more, but for now, that's all it is.

And it *IS* getting coverage in the mainstream media - my first post in this thread listed a few outlets.

It is silly to expect non-stop coverage because at this point, there's very little more to discuss. This falls a little short of a sitting President having an affair with an intern who kept the "dna evidence" of their tryst.

5. MSM picks and chooses which stories to emphasize
and run with, and which to let go after cursory mention. Gannongate seems to have been regaled to the second category - not surprisingly.
Imagine the headlines and media saturation if this was a Democratic administration?????

44. FOR GOD'S SAKE, EVERYONE...
...IT'S THE "CMC" (CORPORATE MEDIA CARTEL), NOT THE "MSM!!!!!"

Sorry to shout, but you really have no idea how framing the CMC, by your own admission, as "mainstream" hurts our cause. Most people LIKE and TRUST things that are "mainstream," and feel negatively about things that aren't. By framing our opponents as "mainstream" (and, by extension, ourselves as "out of the mainstream"), we are basically telling people that our opponents are sensible, accurate, and trustworthy, and that we are none of those things.

6. I don't see that it's important.
Bush is out at the end of his term, anyway. He can never run again. He won't be impeached over this. The drug stories are old, and have already been discounted by the voters. And are not impeachable offenses . Maybe if you can show that he is continuing to break the drug laws????

I just don't see the reason for all the fuss.

7. its call security..
if a prostitute who owes 20,000 in back taxes..and no journalistic credientals ..gets in the white house for 2 yrs ahead of real journalists...who must wait months and months to get clear..whats to keep a real spy or terrorist from getting into the briefing room and killing *??

and the fact that the white house isnt screaming themselves about this security breach..speaks volumns! and the fact that they have remained silent and no one has been fired also speaks volumns!

yes security is important...my husband went to the white house with a sports group during clintons term and one of the reporters was stopped by secret service and was not allowed to go into the white house to meet clinton because when he was in college he was a protestor...he was kept out while the others all went in until they totally cleared him with his major news company..he had protested when he was in college...during the vietnam war..so tell me..how does a protsitute who owes back taxes get into the white house for 2 years even before he worked for a news company and he never did work for a news company he worked for a web site...so tell me if gannon under an alias name can get it..whats stopping a terrorist??

this isnt about a gay guy ..its about a prostittute who could be blackmailed into harming our president..or holding him or the white house hostage..or planting a bomb...so where is tha anger of the white house?? where is the outrage of the media..their lives could have been put at risk...unless they all know something about a nasty little secret..that would be the only reason this white house wouldnt be outraged by this security breach! and the only reason for the silence of the media!

13. Even so, at
worst, I can only see this as either staff incompetence or an attempt to manipulate the media. Either way, Democrats have been guilty of both. So I can't get too outraged.

As for blackmail, nobody could be blackmailed for homosexuality anymore.

It just seems such a small thing to hang any hopes on. I think, in a sad sort of way, that the fact that we consider this important says something about the current impotence of the Democrats and of progressive ideals.

I don't really know what the solution is, but I think we should come up with some positive policy ideas of our own, and stop just opposing everything * proposes just because he did it. I want a vibrant, dynamic, winning Democratic party, not just whiners and nay-sayers.

i am a flight attendant..i have every clearance known to man..so i go to the airport now..post 9/11 and we the people have paid billions for all sorts of new security..so i just say..wtf..i am a flight attendant and i just walk past security..why do i need security?? i do this every day..and i am sick of security..so i will by pass security...how long do you think i would get away with that??at an airport..not the white house..an airport...
i would be in the slammer...

so you are saying post 9/11 gsnnon can for over 2 years get a pass into the press briefing room of the west wing...when he began he had no credentials as he wasn't working for any so called news company..ohh yeah..just a good ole guy who asks for a press pass..doesn't work for a press company..no news company ..but what the hey..we'll give him a pass anyway..ohhh please....this is a guy who had no media credentials, was a prostitute, had a 20,000$$ judgement against him from delaware...and no job...and he just breezed into the west wing with a press pass...no way no how!!

my husband went to the white house under clinton with a sports group..they all had to be cleared prior..to going..they had a huge police escort..and when they got to the white house...everyone was cleared and went in..one reporter who was with them..was stopped by the secret service and he was kept back and not allowed in with the group..they asked him questions and held him up a long time..now ..remember this was ..pre-9/11...and this reporter was held up until the s.s. got hold of his news company and cleared him as their top sports writer...this was a major news company..big time news company...you know why he was held up..they had him on a list of protestors from the vietnam war!! not for breaking the law..not for doing anything but being on a list of protestors!!

so dont give me any crap that gannon was let in by someones incompetance...thats crap..someone wanted him there from on top of this administration..and thats the only way he got in..he was there for propaganda..nothing more and nothing less..and that is against our laws!!

airport security is a good analogy, seeing as how it still sucks, and probably will for some time.

And I dislike propaganda as much as the next fellow. But I'm just not sure what law prevents government officials from trying to manipulate the media. It might be embarassing if found out, of course, but illegal? What law is that?

19. Because the Dem "leadership" hasn't pressed this issue
Since the late 80s, Repubs have created their own media groups to press stories that favor their cause - even if they are bogus, like Juanita Broderick and Paula Jones.

Where are the Dem party "leaders" on Gannon? I haven't heard a peep. Have they not learned anytthing from the past few election defeats? If they give the Repubs a pass on this story, then it will die.

30. WH has not issued a statement on Jeff like they did for the Bush tapes?
The networks are making a big deal in announcing the statement from the WH expressing displeasure about the release of the Bush tapes.

However, in the Gannon matter, there has been a conspicuous absence of any announcement or statement from the WH addressing any concern or displeasure that someone with such a shady past was given unscreened access to the WH for two years. Instead all we have had so far is Scotty's dismissive remarks that there is nothing unusual about Jim/Jeff's pseudonym or background.

He did a brilliant riff with David Gregory, and then Chris Matthews. They tore it up...the prostitute in the press room, the usual snarky humor, but he laid it all out in ways that his GOP-macho listeners cannot ignore. He also hit on the Plame deal.

It's growing legs and striding across the heartland, courtesy of Imus the recovered drunk and cokehead. He's put aside his GOP shilling for the day, and he is beating the issue like a ceremonial drum.

36. This thread is making me angry
There's no question that the MSM is avoiding this story. They are not giving us any ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!! What the fuck are they there for is they don't give us any ANSWERS? They are just reporting what's known, and what's known leaves many many questions to be asked and ANSWERED.

THEY are in the position to ask the questions that we need answers for, nobody else. They are giving this administration a pass on this which is an outrage. It illustrates perfectly to me that the MSM is DEAD in this country. There should be UNIVERSAL OUTRAGE from every one of them in their profession because it makes them all look bad. Instead some of them defend Gannon.

This story couldn't be any better for the media to run with this 24hrs a day, it has all the points they like to cover: SEX, POLITICS, POWER, MONEY, LIES, CORRUPTION, THE MILITARY. It doesn't get any better than this, the Bush administration is caught dead to rights having a fake reporter asking fake questions and they are going to get away with this.

If you can't see that this is a HUGE story that illustrates the death of Journalism and Democracy in our country you are blind, deaf, and asleep.

Why? Why are'nt we being deluged every evening by CBS, NBC, ABC. That to me still is msm, and is to many other people as well. Like many other people I've told cable news to eat it.
The night when Danny, or Peter, or whoever is doing NBC now tells me there is a storm brewing over a male prostitute with whitehouse access, that's when I'll believe that this has officially hit msm.

41. Because he's an obscure reporter for an obscure newservice
that nobody's ever heard of, who got lots of what could only have been day passes to attend briefings.

Moreover, speculation doesn't merit broadcast time.

That he was conservative is the reason everybody's gunning for him, but there's a downside: Stigmatizing him because he had gay pictures up on the web won't fly with most progressives.

If CNN or the NYT did it, they'd be chewed up and spit out by activists.

45. That is the story RIGHT THERE friend, you said it in your subject line
Just How DOES an obscure reporter from an obscure newservice (which only came into existance AFTER the reporter got the job) get access to the most powerful places on the ENTIRE PLANET? How? Why? This isn't news?

You frame it as tho it's only because he is a conservative he's getting it now. That's hogwash. It's simple. He was a fake reporter with an alias working for a fake news service, and he could not have gotten in there without the White House knowing about it and sanctioning it.

You say "speculation doesn't merit broadcast time". Uh, Since when? MSM is nothing but speculation and rumours....very little facts.

Is Hillary running for president?

Did Vince Foster commit suicide?

Whitewater?

We were subjected to 8 years of this garbage every day about Clinton.

The media does not have to speculate in this matter, they are choosing to do so..... because they are not asking questions. If you don't ask questions all you can do is speculate (and they are not even doing that) That right there shows without a doubt the news media in this country is dead and buried. They are bought off. It makes me sad to realize this. I always thought the MSM was just wounded and shell shocked from the right wing attacks and liberal bias and the Antrhax attacks. I was hoping they would recover. But I believe they are now dead. They should be our number one target now, public enemy #1. Bush and the Republicans are #2.

50. You know what...I think the MSM may be on to this
Call me way to optimistic, but I bet a 60 minutes, Dateline, or something is looking into this. I think that this story needs a little time to come out because they need to be very careful that they have their facts straight and do a little digging.

I was upset that there was no Gannon story broken, but I have come to think that some places are simply working on trying to know as much as possible. (and I would die if I held my breath waiting for cable news to report anything........but they would cover it if say, 60 Minutes did, Sy Hersh did, ect....I think those are the people to write to cover this story. If Sy Hersh wrote about this, he would be on Hardball right away). These things happen in a domino effect, it's a matter of getting a big domino to fall first.

60. Only if their bosses let them
and their bosses probably won't let them. It isn't MSM by the way, it's the Corporate Media Cartel which can easily be shortened to CMC.

I really get what the earlier poster was saying. We need to change our language as the first step to changing the overall language. Mainstream sounds reasonable. The Media is no longer reasonable, they are Corporately controlled whores. Whore is not a word the rest of the world will accept but they might agree to accept Corporate Media Cartel which would more accurately represent what they are and it plants in the public's collective mind that they are 1) Corporate and 2) a Cartel. The public isn't at all sure that either of those are good things, in fact, I'd be inclined to say that Joe Q. Public thinks those two things are bad. We want the public to associate the media with bad because 1) the media is currently very, very bad and 2) the public shouldn't trust them. And around we come again to why we need to reframe it this way. CMC, CMC, CMC......

Now, why do we need to do it here, when we all know that the media is crooked? Because we need to have it so ingrained that we never, ever use the abbreviation MSM anywhere outside of here. It needs to flow like second nature from our keyboards and our mouths: CMC, Corporate Media Cartel. And it will if we start right here and never, ever use the abbreviation MSM again.

I heard a story once (I don't remember where) about republicans at a campaign headquarter who had to put a quarter in a jar every time they used a phrase that wasn't a republican sanctioned reframing. That's figuratively what we need to do, here and everywhere.

52. How about we all send mass emails to these new agencies!
I think if you blowup MSN, CBS, ABC, and/or NBC's email server with a wave of emails asking them to thoroughly investigate the Jeff Gannon issue, they would have to air something.

53. Media Matters - Local newspapers across U.S. devoted editorials to Gannong
As of February 22, none of the five largest U.S. newspapers* (USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post) had devoted an editorial on any aspect of the recent revelation that former Talon News Washington bureau chief and White House correspondent Jeff Gannon (aka James D. Guckert) was permitted to attend White House press briefings under an alias and despite having no credentials as a journalist. By contrast, numerous smaller newspapers -- ranging in size from the Houston Chronicle and Minneapolis Star-Tribune to several college newspapers -- have examined the issue in editorials.

Considering the Post was the one that uncovered Watergate, I am losing faith in true investigative journalism.

55. Was covered on Countdown and Hardball last night
Matthews had former Republican Congresswoman/current "Republican Strategist" Susan Molinari (sp?) and Al Sharpton on to 'debate' it. The CONS message is "If the WH were going to plant someone, would they really pick someone that obvious/bad?"

(IMO, the answer is a resounding "YES!" Everything this administration has done and represented is an in-your-face and fuck-you-liberals behavior.)

It was also on Countdown, Lou Dobbs, and Anderson Cooper 360 via clips of the Campbell Brown interview. No mention of Brown's relationship with Dan Senor, btw.

What I want them to talk about in parallel with this exposure of propaganda operations is Rush Limbaugh telling troops in Afghanistan there are people in America who are against them; people who think what they are doing is wrong. (Care to guess who he's referring to?)
