Here's an e-mail a friend spent much of the weekend writing for a former beau. . .
"Here is my response to a Valentine's card I received last week. Perhaps this would resonate with many others."
"I received your Valentine card addressed to the most "forceful Liberal Democrat" you know. Thank you for being such a diehard romantic. Again, I will tell you that I am not a liberal democrat. Again, I will say that I have been Republican most of my life. In the spirit of name calling which really never gets anyone anywhere, I will in turn call you a Neo-conservative Republican since you are so pro Bush. The irony is that Bush and his party are anything but conservative and probably one of the most radical extremist governments this nation has ever seen. I am in fact the one who is truly conservative.
If you can't see this when you take some time to seek out the hard facts, instead of the propaganda that Bush Inc. continually and incessantly puts out, then take a moment to look at the larger view. Not the view that says "Hey, I'm rich and making money and am due to make more money so who cares?" nor the one that says "I wont be on this planet that long so I am in it for the short term." It's a view that has not one rationalization. The larger view I refer to is a clear headed, responsible and informed view.
In your clarity, you will see that the Iraq war was and is nothing more than mass murder in the interests of a family vendetta and oil. You will see that Fallujah was nothing but absolute genocide. You will see that every minute this war continues and every dollar spent for equipment keeps the tap running to fill the pockets of Bush Inc. and its vast military industrial complex. You will see that all of this was done at the expense of our economic stability which completely endangers the very same safety and security they were purportedly protecting. You will see the severe economic decline of our country, the irredeemable decline of the US dollar, the total loss of respect for the United States by the majority of other countries around the world, and the utter idiocy in the use of our monetary and natural resources. You will see the loss of personal freedoms and rights, the censorship of the press, the coercion and bribery of journalists, and the complete suppression and distortion of the truth. You will see the senseless destruction of our environment and the decline in every persons health all in the name of big corporate profits fast. You will see the total hypocrisy you bought into everyday.
Look at the "Clean Air Act" which actually destroys our air and the very rules we put in to place to protect it. Look at the "No Child Left Behind Act" where there have never been more children left behind. "Help America Vote Act," "Healthy Forests Initiative," "Clear Skies Act," "Medicare Modernization Act," "Save Social Security," all doing exactly the opposite of what their names would imply. The name is there to dupe the naive and to keep the brainwashed, brainwashed.
Have a look at the new propaganda army ad which would indicate that being a marine is like living out a 007 movie swishing through knee deep powder from a posh resort presumably hot on the scent of the vortex of evil. Or the blasphemous advertisement that overlays the faces of marine soldiers onto the faces of the founding fathers while a man struggles to climb Mount Rushmore. He almost falls when a giant almighty deified marine soldier appears and extends his ethereal hand. Shall I list the side effects?
Look at our embarrassing and telling absence from the Kyoto conferences and now our refusal to comply with the Treaty that reduces toxic emissions into the global air.
Look at the latest Bill signed Friday by Bush Inc. that protects huge companies from class action lawsuits for wrongdoing against many people with many repercussions. When and if these cases ever even reach the federal courts and these judges, it is now impossible to guarantee any justice that is in any way proportionate to the damages inflicted. Corporations can now conduct themselves egregiously with no fear of reprisal. States have less and less say in matters. These issues will now be handled by federal courts where Bush Inc. now has control.
The Republicans I once knew weren't for big government. The Republicans I knew believed in human rights, free speech, and justice. The Republicans I knew were all about responsible spending. The Republicans I knew believed in environmental protections. The Republicans I knew weren't zealots who incorporate their personal religion into their speeches and edicts. The Republicans I knew didn't reward corporate crime. The Republicans I knew didn't condone lying, never mind applaud it. The Republicans I knew didn't have a God that told them to kill.
The actions of this administration are reprehensible and horrifying to someone like me, someone with a conscience and morals and someone with intelligence and an eye for the future. Locate your conscience again and make your decisions and opinions from that place. I was so hoping to wake you up. I have been astonished at the power of spin such that you even now spin yourself. Even those as bright as you have been hopelessly dumbed down by Bush. It defies logic and rational thinking. It is an amazing phenomenon to me.
We no longer have a democracy. Today's Presidential, Senatorial and Congressional elections are run by proprietary software. You don't have to look far to see who owns, created and implemented the software. Bush was elected by fraud, twice. Without reform, Bush Inc. will be elected again and again. Because we no longer have a functioning system of checks and balances in the government to bring about corrective legislation this cannot be undone. How our votes were and will be actually tabulated will remain a secret. Bush Inc. has even managed to control the legal system so that any checks and balances that might have provided are gone as well.
In the news and television there is so much censorship and control that items that should be in bold screaming front page headlines or top story news are buried if not entirely suppressed. Have a look at who now owns the media and determines what news is covered and what isn't. See what is happening to those brave few who try to expose the crimes of this administration. Today uncensored news about the United States is only found through international news sources and on the Internet. Today, in the U.S., journalists are going to prison for not divulging their sources. Let's just hope they don't end up in one of the prisons where torture is condoned.
Of course there really is no point in enlightening you about this because there is no stopping them now. It's a rogue, dangerous government that rules and controls the Senate, the House, and the Courts. Bush Inc. is now able to do whatever it wants with total and complete impunity. Its all about power and money and not about what is right. Being the history buff that you are, you should see the parallels not to a democracy, but to a fascist state. Our esteemed Republican Former President and Four Star General Eisenhower once stated:
"In the council of government we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."
We are in for a long, long rule of police state censorship, corporatism and a complete loss of freedom as we once knew it all at the hands of Bush Inc. Terrorism and terrorists are our greatest enemy? Now isn't that the irony.
I hope you kissed democracy good-bye while we still had a democracy.
Happy Valentine's Day to you too."
