AARP is the boulder in the middle of the highway, USA Next is the dynamite
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 01:50 PM by LynneSin
http://aarp.typepad.com/socialsecurity/

These anti-AARP efforts are rooted in neoconservative ideology. Charles Jarvis is president USA Next and was deputy secretary for the interior in the Reagan and first Bush administrations. The true motives of these anti-AARP efforts are clear in this quote from him:

They (AARP) are the boulder in the middle of the highway to personal savings accounts. We will be the dynamite that removes them.

I hope that when Chuckie Jarvis is retired he ends up in some third rate nursing home like the one the grandma living at in the movie "Happy Gilmore"

:grr:

1. Wasn't Jarvis
the idiot behind California's Proposition 13 (property tax freeze) a few years back?

If he is, I remember him...this guy is delusional at best.

6. If it's the same Jarvis, I hope his place in Hell is being
prepared. It was he and Reagan that caused the beginning of the homeless population in California that eventually went nationwide when other states adopted many of their policies. This social problem started in the middle of the seventies, become visibly noticable at the beginning of the eighties, and persists to this day.

it was just said on AAR worked for Ronald Reagan when he was Governor of California and then President. Could he be a relative of Howard?

17. I'm not willing to forgive AARP yet, but check out the link
in the first message. They diss on Fox. Tells you not to believe them (almost).

USA (which I've never heard of until this thread) might have bit of more than it can chew. I can see making an argument against seniors (I wouldn't dare, my mom would kick my ass) but USA seems to have made it personal which just gives AARP amunition to discredit them.

Hopefully this will be fun to watch. Unless Bush figures out how to quiet all seniors.

I need to wash the shower with lye and bleach afterwards. First did you see the poll?

"Did you know that AARP has received over $1 BILLION in taxpayer dollars over the past 20 years?"

How do you vote yes or no on this???

I tried to go to the GAO site to see if I could find any such disbursements but couldn't access it at this time.

Not only that they aren't very forthcoming as to whom their Board is. So far I could only find out that Art Linkletter is the retiring chair and that guy Charlie Jarvis is the new one.

19. That's because this jerks learned their lessons
Hannity use to have polls on his website where there was one clear repuke answer and one more sane democratic answer. Then we liberals would get in there and mess with the polls so Hannity's polls would show like 75% think Bush really did dodge the war - stuff like that.

So now all of these websites are basically creating the 21st Century of the "Push Poll". Lee Atwater use to use Push Polls to help get repukes elected back in the 70s/80s. THey'd make phone polls with questions like "Did you know Jimmy Carter did (Fill in the blank with some disgusting lie)" or "How do you feel that Bill Clinton may have "again - another disgusting question")

So now we have online Push Polls that aren't really meant to gauge what people are thinking but to put an idea out there and make folks think about that concept.

Vile and disgusting

"United Seniors Association, Inc. is one
of three “senior” groups started by right-wing direct-mail

seniors under the guise of protecting Medicare and Social

As a dot.org, it seems they are claiming non-profit status. Isn't this the reason DU doesn't claim non-profit status is because of it's highly political nature? This website is highly political IMO and this means that any money they recieve in donations is tax-deductible to the donor. Methinks they have violated the law here.

29. hmmmm.....from the website:
USA Next is a national project of the United Seniors Association which is celebrating its 14th anniversary as the non-partisan, 1.5 million-plus nationwide grassroots network Uniting the Generations for America's Future. United Seniors Association works to expand investment and retirement freedom, health freedom, tax freedom, national security and economic freedom for American families, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The organization's National Chairman is the renowned celebrity, businessman, and author Art Linkletter. Charles Jarvis is Chairman & Chief Executive.

USA is a nonprofit nonpartisan organization under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Because USA lobbies on behalf of American Families, contributions are not tax deductible for tax purposes.

wonder how we can trace the 10 mil in funds. i'm not sure how to go about finding records of nonprofit financials.

Jammin Java and the Brindley Brothers Highlighted in President Bush’s Tax Cut Address

Washington, DC – During his nationally television speech at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Bush praised two local musicians and businessmen for their “courage” in launching a new venture immediately after 9-11.

Speaking to the Tax Cut Coalition President Bush said, “I mentioned the Brindley boys were with us today, from Vienna. They…help define the entrepreneurial spirit in America. They started their business right after September the 11th, 2001. Those are confident people. Those are people that said, ‘we're not going to allow a terrorist attack to diminish our dreams to have our own business.’ I appreciate not only the courage, but I appreciate this -- that they have gone from five employees to 25 employees.”

That being said, if the networks won't play them they'll get 24/7 play on the Cable echo chamber.
