Hunters Last Column: 'Shotgun Golf with Bill Murray' (He's Suicidal?)
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 03:13 PM by truthpusher
on edit: after seeing a few comments on Hunters last column, I read through it again. I agree, this does not sound like a man about to commit suicide?

1. Just heard about him & Johnny Depp on NY's eve...
Someone wrote that he and Johnny were taking rifle shots at boxes of dynamite...must have been a helluva NY's...

RIP Hunter...you were one of my heroes...

2. Thanks
It's just a damn shame that there aren't more people on DU that understand the enormity of the loss of one of America's finest journalists. HST was a true American in the sense of H.L. Mencken, Ambrose Bierce and Mark Twain, and it will be truly a long winter before we see his like again.

Godspeed HST

6. Most depressed people don't sound depressed.....
...right before they commit suicide. In fact, one of the pre-suicide stages involves an "acceptance" of one's mortal end, and a sense of calm, even euphoria, before the event occurs.

Thompson is also a brilliant writer, and was quite capable of disguising his true feelings. Writing was his job, and like any job, you try not to let your personal feelings get in the way of getting it done.

7. What was Hemingway's last book before he checked out?
Don't think it matters.

I don't begrudge him the right to check out if he's just had enough and can't take it anymore. I think its selfish to whine that he's not here to entertain and amuse us anymore. I'm glad he was here while he was here, he was a great writer and exceedingly entertaining. Maybe he didn't want to do the Prozac route and just said "I've had enough".

It happens.
