Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 08:05 PM by spanone
Let me ask you this. How the hell does a publisher FORCE a writer to release something. I don't buy this crap at all.

<snip> Wead said he didn't intend for the tapes to become public in his lifetime, but he was forced to release them by his publisher. <snip>

8. I was in the publishing business. Doesn't work that way.
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 08:00 PM by spanone
I just e-mailed Atria publishing, a division of Simon and Shuster and asked them this very question. Essentially, how does a publishing company 'force' a writer to release his PERSONAL tapes. We'll see if we get an answer. P.S. A writer doesn't work for the publisher, it's usually the other way around.

9. Yes, but the book was released Five Weeks Ago.
And I suspect that these revelations are not in the book. Just the transcripts.

10. That would make one wonder why the book was released in January
It would provide them with a generic diversion when they needed one, or could it be that it was planned to overshadow a specific event. Whatever the case it's eclipsing the JJ-GG scandal in the news. I wonder how much coverage Ritter would have gotten if not for the tapes. I doubt very much but we'll never know for sure.

The funny thing is the press won't even question Bush about the tapes. He gets a diversion and a free pass all in one.

11. Could have been an 'ace in the hole' for when Rove needed it.
And with Gannon, they needed it.

13. Nobody has said these statement are in the book.
They are in the transcripts only. Otherwise people would be qouting the book.

14. Those are some impressive scruples.
I'm sure he had the option of just walking away with the tapes. No one was threatening the lives of his family members, I'm assuming, so why the hell would a guy who believes bush is a "historic figure" would let himself be pushed around like this.

16. That's the obvious hypothesis, but....
we have to stop hypothesizing and learn how to uncover these manipulations of the media. I'm not sure what we bloggers and posters can do, but map out the vast network (on both sides) and learn how these things come to pass.

If we are meant to be independent media watchdogs, we must become experts. And the "we" must necessarily be a large number of informed citizens, who are willing to spread the word: LTTEs, calling into radio shows, being guests on radio shows, etc.

The information is out there for the taking, it's just difficult to process it all. But the end result, will be an open source "playbook" that we will use to thwart manipulation of our press. It doesn't belong to them, it belongs to all Americans.

17. No we don't. The hypothetical is the basis to go and search for facts.
I'm asking these questions primarily because I don't know the answers and am asking for DU input. If my hypothosis is obvious, I'm sorry. I have written to the publisher asking HOW they forced him, no answer as of yet. Hope you join in the search.

18. Sorry. I really didn't mean it as an insult.
I may just be tired, pissed that the whole tape story is getting any airtime, etc.

You are absolutely right. This is a question that needs answering: Is this a coordinated distraction? When thinking about how a gov't wants to maintain a particular image, you invariably come to media manipulation. All world leaders do it to some extent.

What I was getting at, was urging all DUers to address these hypotheses not as isolated instances of manipulation. Any research that uncovers new facts is just another piece of the puzzle. Our job will never be "done", but that would be boring. The manipulators are not any smarter than us, so we have no excuse to let them get away with it.

Thanks, spanone. Good luck on your research. DUers are savvy and generous with their time; ask for help, and you'll eventually get it. Unfortunately, I'm still behind on the article I'm writing on GOPUSA/Talon. If you want the link to the blog where it will be posted, just ask. :)

19. Thanks, I wasn't insulted. I'm feeling much like yourself.
The double standards and the unmittegated gall of this administration makes me want to climb on my roof and scream at times. I understand that most of the public doesn't have the time or curiosity to delve into this crap, but I also have the sneaking suspicion that the adminstration knows this all to well and they are capitalizing on it as never before. Thanks for being supportive; see you down the threads. Hope springs eternal......
