I have been posting and reading here for about a year now, and it has really been a positive experience! I first saw a link to DU in a post somebody made to a newsgroup. I clicked the link out of curiosity and I've been hooked ever since. These forums are very informative and highly entertaining. I remember how good it felt to see a messageboard filled with people who felt like I did about the issues.
When I started reading and posting last year, the primaries were a major source of discussion. I remember seeing how passionate people were for their candidates. I was pulling for Kerry, but I liked all of the Democratic candidates and knew I just wanted to beat the right wing! In the months that followed, I read opinions about issues I hadn't thought about as much before. Looking back, I'm amazed at how much new information I got about politics just by reading the DU messageboard!
I had always been left-of-center, but thought of myself as moderate. The reason I thought this way is because I didn't follow a party line(and still don't). Of course, every online political test I took told me I was liberal! And, as anybody who reads the DU boards can see, liberals don't follow a party line either! It was the words and actions of the right wing, especially on talk radio, that really "pushed me to the left". The right wing reaction to the Supreme Court's "sodomy law" ruling showed the true colors of that ideology. My strategy now: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. I didn't like the ACLU a few years ago. Now I'm a monthly donor in response to the election results. My opinion on the ACLU changed when I looked at what they really stood for rather than what the popular opinion of them was. It turns out I agree with them a lot more than I thought!
I just wanted to say "Thanks" for the enjoyment and information I get from these forums!
