Schools Get Wired For Sound
Classrooms Get State-Of-The-Art Sound Systems

Feb 21, 2005 7:35 pm US/Central

RIVERTON, Utah (CBS) Foothills Elementary in Riverton, Utah, might look like your typical American school, but it sure doesn't sound like it, reports CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker.

You see, Foothills is wired with a state-of-the-art, infrared sound system. It's transmitted from this necklace and bathes the classroom in the teacher's voice. Now, every seat is a front-row seat.

"It makes an amazing difference. I can honestly say I've never had to raise my voice to the kids," said teacher Jennifer Hebertson.

(snip)

It seems schools have tried everything to improve: smaller classes, more teachers, more homework, more computers. One solution was right under their noses — well ears actually.

1. It helped in college, too.
I didn't have to spend so much time, effort, and focus on hearing.

3. I used a sound system in my classroom
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 02:29 AM by cmd
I've been retired for two years, but the last year I taught I used a sound system. Our entire building was wired by our speech therapist who obtained the systems through grants. Not only was it a great way for me to communicate with my students; it also gave power to my soft spoken "shy" kids. They loved speaking into the microphone.

One thing the teacher does have to remember is to turn the mike off if she/he steps into the hall for a private conversation with the principal or a parent. And, for goodness sake, turn it off before going into the restroom.

added comment: I had both a clip on mike and a hand held one. It was an ideal set up.
