Most members of Congress are simple followers...
They are not leaders. They know less about the workings of politics than many here at DU. Most of them, not all, got into office because they got "Party" support and had more money than their opponent - not because they were politically more astute or more intelligent. We have some real dumbasses up in Washington right now. No doubt, we have always had a fair amount of dumbasses but we have an incredible shitload of them at present. Do not give them any credibility they do not deserve.

1. yes
some members of the House are very unqualified. They get elected because of rhetoric spouting. "I'm going to cut your taxes" "I'm going to stand up for family values" It goes on on both sides. Way too many people got elected by saying, "I'm going to help the president push his agenda and the other guy is going to be an independent thinker"

2. Given the state of electronic voting I can guess how SOME got in.
You just know that some of these guys could NOT have won an election for Streetsweeper, let alone a Congressional seat. If you stop to consider the "wonders" of electronic voting, suddenly it all makes sense.

The local and state parties put up the dumbest (most malleable) guy they can find, they rig the election, and viola! You have what passes for Congress today.
