WP, Kurtz: "Cyber-Cease Fire?"
Cyber-Cease Fire?
Tuesday, Feb 22, 2005; 10:00 AM

In all the recent hoo-hah over Dan Rather, Eason Jordan and Jeff Gannon, the plot line has been clearly established: bloggers versus the mainstream media.

From one viewpoint, it's brave, tireless, iconoclastic citizen journalists using new technology to take on the big, arrogant, lazy and biased MSM.

From the other side of the divide, it's partisan, opinionated, sometimes reckless and slightly crazy bloggers trying to lynch responsible journalists who, unlike their online tormentors, are at least trying to be fair.

But what if this good-versus-kinda evil template is wrong?

What if each side shouldn't view the other as the enemy?

A possible thaw in this cold war has emerged, courtesy of Bill Keller....

4. It's is about truth vs. lies, not good vs. evil
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 11:57 AM by rocknation
And I'm on the side that's telling the truth--completely, accurately, and objectively--no matter who it hurts. The MSM dislikes liberal bloggers, at least, because they keep catching the MSM in shilling, misleading, conspiring, ignoring, whoring, stonewalling, and out-and-out LIES. The blogosphere formed as the result of dissatisfaction with MSM coverage, and now bloggers are supposed go crawling to them for forgiveness?

5. My chin dropped to my keyboard when I read this...
"Keller edits what bloggers view as the biggest and baddest MSM property around, the New York Times. And it turns out he gets it. He reads bloggers, understands where they're coming from and doesn't lapse into the knee-jerk defensiveness that many other Old Media types display toward the new usurpers."

Is Howie so blind in his opinion that he does NOT see that Keller's description:

"knee-jerk defensiveness that many other Old Media types lapse into"

describes Howie to a T?

28. Bingo
I think the whole exchange is stooopid, but if Keller isn't defensive -- and dismissive, I don't know what he is.

Kurz is embarrassing himself yet again. He seems to get more pathetic with each passing day.

6. The Internet bloggers know what they are
the media is still a fraud. The cartoonish premise is in fact, scarily, the real one. When they start talking about fair journalists(hah, they do a lot of fearful whining for all their customary arrogance in adjudicating truth) they have made the case for the first few lines.

When the media is forced to have a functional and independent news service they can talk. As of now the job has been abdicated to admitted Web amateurs who have little to compete against except the arrogance and lies of the real power, the deadly monopoly of widespread access and print dominance. The Web people also have the same trolls in their midst as those now sponsored by power and dominating the news "disservices".

Spare the accommodation and flattery and do the job and the amateurs can recede a bit into journalistic perspective. The fault lies not in the blogs but ourselves, the media "victims" should say. Real journalists, those fired fro trying to do their jobs should flood the Internet and make this revolt against propaganda work even better.

12. HOWIE HOWIE HOWIE....
missed the boat again!

brave, tireless, iconoclastic citizen journalists using new technology to take on the big, arrogant, lazy and biased MSM.

now, HOWIE, those would be the LIBERALS, OK? doing the work and reporting what YOU and your 'MSM' check-cashing, butt-licking collegues refuse to do.

From the other side of the divide, it's partisan, opinionated, sometimes reckless and slightly crazy bloggers trying to lynch responsible journalists who, unlike their online tormentors, are at least trying to be fair.

now, HOWIE, you know perfectly well that you're describing the CONSERVATIVE bloggers here. Rather is a 'responsible' journalist, Gannon is a WHORE (in every sense of the word) and if one can be 'tormented' because of the FACTS OF THEIR LIFE... well, you're just a check-cashing, butting, WHORE yourself, so, you'd never get it anyway.

14. It's not blogs vs. corporate media, it's *facts* vs. corporate media.
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 12:07 PM by Stirk
If the big corporate media outlets would report the facts, blogs wouldn't be relevant.

People like Kurtz just don't get it.

17. I think the MSM knows what a shitty job they have been doing
and are running scared. There is no 'investigative journalism' among the biggies. When blogs dig up the real shit it is just as important as if the biggies do it.

18. don't forget, though....
....that another set of bloggers exists and is being considered here by Kurtz, too -- those on the right of the sort who fraudulently pushed the Swiftboaters and took out Eason Jordan and Dan Rather.

Mistah Kurtz might be fully correct in his complaints about them. They do NOT aspire to truth. They aspire to sheer thuggery.

20. Eat shit, Howie.
That's all you ever serve up in your column and now it's time to suck down what you've been dishing up for years, buddy. That goes for the rest of the WaPo and NYT whores who are being tormented. :nopity:

Trying to be fair? Spare me. Your keyboard was in overdrive during the Clinton administration and the Lewinsky scandal. Now we have Gannon. Get ready for Spin Cycle II, Revenge is a dish best served by a hot military stud.

The foreign press knew a story when they saw one and they pretty much reported the facts that the reckless, crazy bloggers uncovered much to your evident chagrin.

23. As far as I am concerned anything that brings new information into light
is a good thing even if the person doing it is bias. After new things are uncovered then the MSM can take over the story. It's 95% good and 5% bad.
