9. I do, too
Of course, as presiding head of the Church of England, she can't be seen giving public support to her son marrying a divorcee, even though it's been announced that she finally approved the whole thing.

He's gonna have to abdicate. Poor old Chuckie.

I do love seeing that Edwardian protocol tripping them all up. Whenever I despair over my own situation, I look at them and feel grateful for it.

20. It was so much more fun when he married Diana . . .
and we Irish lined the streets to gave them a rousing cheer:

"Up Chuck, and Di! Up Chuck, and Di!"

Ah, it just won't have quite the same spirit . . .

19. Question
I really could care less about the royals, but do have one question.

Why is there any controversy over the wedding at all? Why can't he have a full religious ceremony?

The Church of England was founded by his great great ... grandfather on the entire premise of divorce. I don't get it.

21. Guess they are ashamed of their heritage!
Remember these people live in an unreal world.

I am certainly not a royal watcher, otherwise I'd have the answer to this question: Princess Anne had divorced and remarried...was the Queen at those nuptials too?

24. Because it wasn't founded on the premise of divorce
it was founded on an argument over "annulment" - which is different. And the line of descent from Henry VIII to Charles is not as direct as that.
We've been discussing this whole thing over here in the little corner of DU that is forever "old europe":

either.

They specifically names William and Harry.

Man, I'd love to sit at the dinner table with these people.

Remember the scene from "The Color Purple", when Sophia pulled a knife on Mister?? :D

28. Did she attend the Princess Royal's second wedding?
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 05:23 PM by ohio_liberal
I can't remember....

As the head of the Church of England I would suspect it would be difficult for her to attend and still hold up the beliefs of the church regarding divorce.

on edit:

FWIW, the Princess Royal also had to have her second marriage in a civil ceremony in Scotland, not England.

29. PLEASE!!!
It's bad enough that we have to put up with these morons here in the UK - why the hell should anybody in the US - or anywhere else - give a damn what they get up to? Save yourselves! Ignore them. Once we've finally got rid of them then hopefully no-one will ever speak of them again.

31. Excuse me American type folks....
I realize you're caught up in your own problems and all, but this will affect you down the road.

And it might be nice if you stopped bashing 'royalty' just on principle and thought about it.

There is a republican movement in the UK. They want to get rid of the royal family and have been working to that end for years.

Charles is a perfect target for them. Almost heaven-sent.

Hence all the ridicule, and highlighting of royal gaffes.

The UK is hesitant about joining the EU...currently America's nemisis with their Euro.

One of the major stumbling blocks is the royal family.

Would Brussels rule the Queen of England?

Would the Brits stand for Poland ordering the royal family about?

So...to join the EU...the royal family has got to go.

And if the UK becomes a republic and joins the EU...which is already increasing in size and influence by leaps and bounds....and isn't interested in helping out the US on anything....

Now, do you see how all this affects the US?
