It's simple. Someone who is sure the machines can be hacked has to actually hack an election on purpose.

Hack the machine, screw up the results, and then IMMEDIATELY announce what has been done. Think about it. They can't be prosecuted for proving the machines are vulnerable. And the press would be highly sympathetic to the effort if there was a "paper trail" to prove this was simply an effort to save democracy in America.

In my experience, people who purposely exploit something to drive home the point of how broken it is usually end up doing more harm than good. There's always someone around to think "wow, what a great idea," if TPTB refuse to change what needs to be fixed.

A good friend of mine went to jail for hacking into something to prove it could be done, then immediately admitting it.
