DU should ban "evenhanded" posts!
There is no reason to allow an upstart to be treated as an equal in the Democratic Party. It would go against decades of our allegiences to the party elites. Expect letters of condemnation from the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Joe Lieberman, and John Kerry if you don't rectify this situation immediately.

10. I'm not to good at sarcasm Walt...usually just call it like I see it.
Here ya go:

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean drew fire from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and several Jewish lawmakers on Wednesday over his remarks concerning Israel.

"This is not a time to be sending mixed messages," Dean's critics said in a letter circulated by Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., and signed by Pelosi and more than two dozen other Democratic House members who are supporting other candidates. "On the contrary, in these difficult times we must reaffirm our unyielding commitment to Israel's survival and raise our voices against all forms of terrorism and incitement."

snip

"It is unacceptable for the U.S. to be `evenhanded' on these fundamental issues," the letter said.

24. Rep. Nadler says this is a "political" attack by "Gephardt supporters"

New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a Dean supporter who is Jewish, said he was comfortable with Dean's position, although Dean initially used some language that could concern some pro-Israelis. But Nadler said Dean's clarifications since then should have cleared that up.

"This is sent out by Gephardt supporters and it should be seen for what it is -- a political document trying to exploit his statement before he has a chance to clarify it," Nadler said.

33. Nadler, as per usual, has it about right.
I love that guy (not because I support HD and he defended him on this issue) because he invariably calls it exactly how it is. He does not give a fuck.

"I believe the position that I take on Israel is exactly the position the United States has taken for 54 years," he said on the show. But he acknowledged that saying there should be an "evenhanded policy" toward the Israelis and the Palestinians may have been a poor choice of words."

sent to Peoria immediately. And all upstarts should have their lasagna wrapped in plastic just in case the waiters from Sardi's decide to press their shirts.

15. Dean makes sense
My friend went to Ramallah with Witness for Peace. He served as a neutral citizen observer at IDF checkpoints. He basically helped Palestinian schoolgirls cross the road and get to school past men with loaded M-16's.

No doubt, the Israelis suffer at the hands of terrorists. There is also no doubt that they respond with considerable brutality. A more even-handed approach is the only way to break the cycle of violence there. (if it can be broken)

Dean needs to hang tough. The DLC'ers are throwing a few punches, but this is nothing compared to the main event when the dirty tricks squad gets cut loose with a $200 million budget.

18. Here is the statement of the year!
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 09:19 PM by madfloridian
From the letter according to SFGate:
SNIP....""It is unacceptable for the U.S. to be `evenhanded' on these fundamental issues," the letter said. ....."

That is it, no evenhandedness in our Democratic party! :7

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/09/10/national2031EDT0898.DTL

On Edit: I don't think the utter ridiculous nature of that statement has sunk in yet.

23. And a good one it was.
I really drew her aide into a long conversation. She stated that Pelosi did not like the violence there. I made her clarify, she to her credit tried.

I said what about the violence constantly inflicted upon the Palestinians. She started the Israeli homeland thing. I said I just happen to think that the other side deserves a homeland, too. She said there should be no violence.

So trust me, it is sincerely written letter. They meant it, no evenhandedness.

To clarify, I am neither Palestinian nor Jewish, just a Democratic who believes that both sides deserve respect.
