Gene Scott is dead.

OK, so everyone knows how much I hate religion in general, and Teeee-Veeeee Preachers in particular, but this guy was, IMO, the only honest one in the bunch.

At least he TOLD you he was gonna spend your "love gifts" on himself, and some of his talks were very interesting and fascinating.

Well, Doc, now you know if it's all true or not, dontcha?

RIP

1. He's still spreading the word...
24 hours... streaming on the internet.
http://www.drgenescott.com/home.htm

During the Swaggert and Baker scandals, I could catch him on some Nashville channel.
I'm agnostic and was disgusted by their hypocrisy, but I found Gene oddly captivating and quite frank.

R.I.P. Doctor Gene

2. Gene Was A Trip...Play That Tune Again
Any details?

A small UHF station used to play him late at night for a couple months...a bunch of us didn't know if this guy was for real or what...and soon began a "Gene Scott Fan Club"...having fun watching him shake down the flock.

Yep, the man did like to live big and didn't mind showing it. Then he'd get on camera for hours and talk about himself. OTO...this man didn't take shit from anyone and didn't toe the "fundie" political line. One night we heard him light into Raygunomics bit by piece like a Harvard economist mixed with a social engineer mixed with a someone expecting the rapture at any minute. This guy never stood still.

Wherever he is now...I hope they stock Cubans.

Cheers, Gene...

3. I thought this guy was Harry Nilsson when I first saw him
They looked just alike. And that kind of stunt would fit perfectly in with Harry Nilsson's offbeat sense of humor.

I remember tuning to his show on some obscure religious channel in L.A. and always being quite entertained. This guy had an Andy Kaufmanesque vibe that constantly had you scratching your head and wondering if he was trying to be funny or if was dead serious.

His passing is sad. He was an American original.

5. He was not like the rest
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 12:13 PM by Enraged_Ape
I never once heard him rail against gays, nonbelievers, fornicators, or the poor in order to frighten his flock and fill his coffers. If he wanted to buy a boat or plane for himself, he cut the B.S. and just just told you that's what he wanted to do.

6. You've got to be kidding me
He railed against nonbelievers all the time. I heard him say that contributors could "guarantee their place in Heaven". He was an insulting and arrogant POS.

Gene Scott "cut the B.S."? He thrived on it.

7. Anti-woman too
I heard him say numerous times that the role of a woman was to be completely subservient to a man. Ugh.

9. 800 338 3030...I know it like my Social Security number.
Way back when, we got a few friends together and established a 'King's House' for ourselves. We'd drink beer and laugh and enjoy every moment.

I've been an atheist, or something like that, since I was 10 years old. But Gene was always the goods -- pure entertainment.

In protest of who knows what, he once repeatedly played -- for what seemed to be five years straight -- a video clip of a gospel band singing a song which I remember almost as well as I remember his phone number:

I want to know that Jesus welcomes me there
I do not want to be denied
Let me live in that city so fair
That's enough for me to know

We hit the floor when he one day he mentioned our little fan cub (aka King's House) on live TV. That's something I never got from MASH or Cheers or even SCTV. I guess it was all those calls we made.

We never sent a dime, but he was happy to give us...umm...whatever that was.

If there is a city so fair, I know that Jesus has welcomed you there.

Thanks Gene!

11. this guy was crazy
but he said something one night about gays that made me like him. He said something like'Only God can judge people. Not me or my peers, althought they say they can' I read an article where gene said EVERYONE regardless of sexual orientation, color of skin, religious beliefs, etc. were welcome at his church.Considering this is VERY rare thesedays, I take my hat off to him. Probaly why no one has ever heard of the guy. he didn't draw attention to himself. No, I think these guys are crazy but gene Scott seemed to be different than the rest of them sons of bitch's! RIP Dr.Scott!

13. I never judged or listened to his words in that way...
I just wanted to laugh.

I do recall, however, that he picked his nose and said something about "damn boogers". But, even then, I did not learn a lesson of life; I just laughed.

10. Reverend Ike is also honest about those "love offerings"
I used to watch him on TV when I was a child. He would tell the people point blank where the money was going...even show off the diamonds and cars.

OMG! He's online!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

I never caught any Rev Ike on TV, but I did hear him occasionally on late night AM radio through the sixties (I could pick up his LA broadcast in SF)....It was really funny...thanks for the mind blast.

12. I don't know
While honesty is certainly a characteristic I admire, can you really like a guy who uses religion for financial gain? Is a thief any less of a thief if he tells you he's stealing from you first? Or a murderer any less a murderer?

I'm an atheist, but I would never use something as personal as one's faith for my own gain, even if I told them outright I was doing it.

21. He considered himself a teacher.
His PhD was from Stanford, not Liberty U or Bob Jones...

And he worked a whiteboard a HELL of a lot better than I've seen some "real" professors do it...

"I've always believed and taught that a Teacher should be worthy of his hire.....So, now if I've TAUGHT you anything these past 2-and-a-half hours, GET ON THE PHONE and tell me what it's WORTH to you! Now play another song....Play the "pissant" song, we haven't heard that one in a while...."

"Am I boring you?"
(phone bank) "NO SIR!!!"

I considered him a lot more honest that the rest of them who tell you you're buying Indulgences to get into Heaven with when you send your money in...

27. He's all over the shortwave
You can catch him on shortwave 24/7 on about three frequencies at a time.

I used to listen to him while drifting off to sleep for a while.

A crotechety old coot, but he played rock and roll, cussed, loved cigars and race horess and -- most importantly -- raked his fellow fundies over the coals. He seemed to hate the Jerry Falwells as much as the lefties do.

He was off the wall, and maybe a bit of a con man, but he was also weirdly honest and seemed to really mean it.
