Somebody wrote in to my local weekly to say that he paid $20,000 in taxes last year and wanted to keep his money & opt out of any government programs. This is my response:

The person who wrote in about his tax money in "It's My Money" is very naive. Does he mean to forego driving on all the roads built and maintained with tax dollars? Will he no longer buy food or fill prescriptions that are approved by the FDA with tax dollars? Will he get rid of his car built to federal safety standards? Perhaps if his home catches fire, he can use his own water to put it out and not call the fire department? Then he can rebuild it himself, as the insurance industry is regulated by the government. If his home is robbed while he is away, he can track the burglar himself just like McGyver and not bother using up my tax dollars by calling the police. Please tell him to stop breathing my air kept reasonably clean by federal and state clean air standards, too.
