The new SUV..........
I was watching ESPN's Cold Pizza this morning and they had a segment about this thing:

http://www.internationaldelivers.com/site_layout/xtfamily/cxt.asp

Made for those who think the Hummer is just a little too small.

Holy Cow.

1. I see them in my neighborhood all the time.
They're called tow trucks.

4. Hardly........
These are being marketed to the average consumer.

That's the difference.

15. It's just amazing to me that this sort of thing would find.........
an audience willing to buy one.

It's like, too much...way, way too much, and relatively useless in the real world. Where would one park it?

17. The "average consumer" can't come up with $90,000
which is the base price of this vehicle.

I refuse to call it a monstrosity for two reasons--you're not going to see that many of them (a medium-truck factory isn't all that large) and in the right hands, it's a good vehicle.

I don't think we'll see many of them in "civilian hands" for one reason--it won't fit in a standard garage, which generally has a seven-foot door and an eight-to-nine-foot ceiling.

And it has air brakes. Air brakes are their own special pain in the ass. When you get ready to go in the morning, you have to make sure the drain valve on the air tank is closed. Then you have to idle the truck until you've got enough air pressure to stop. At the end of the day you have to drain the air tank. If you don't do it, the air system will rust out and you'll never stop.

Air brakes and rebuilding the garage? Mama ain't gonna go for that.

19. We'll see I guess.........
The same people who can afford a Hummer can buy this.

I thought the same (that not many would hit the roads) thing about the Hummer....wish I was right about that.

Doubt the garage's height would effect much, a lot of big SUV's don't fit into normally sized garages.

It has air brakes for now.

I disagree with your reasons for thinking this won't sell, but I do hope you are right.

28. It will always have air brakes
Hydraulic with vacuum assist over hydraulic--the standard power brake system on every car and light truck made today--can't generate enough force to stop this thing ESPECIALLY if it's loaded; air over hydraulic doesn't have that problem.

Note that the Hummers we're seeing the most of on the roads are the $40,000 H2, not the $117,000 H1. (If you want a great belly laugh, go to hummer.com and build an H1. You will discover that off-road tires, which one would expect on a tactical vehicle, are part of a $5,825 options package.) I figured the H2 would be fairly popular because it's in the same price range as the big FoMoCo and Chevrolet/GMC sport-utes, and it's got a "presence" the others don't have. It also has less interior volume than a Navigator or a Suburban, and the Suburban can be ordered with three rows of seats, but the H2 "looks tough," and looking tough is apparently where it's at. H1s won't ever be as common because for the price of an H1 you can get a pair of H2s, or an H2 plus a Mercedes, or the Mercedes SUV plus a Harley, or a Harley plus a house to use as a rental property...you get the idea. Rich people didn't get rich by spending their money irrationally.

Here's one problem that may be insurmountable--licensing. My driver's license allows me to drive a vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds--and the CXT's GVWR is a bit higher than that.

We can go round and round about this, but I just don't think the American motoring public is going to accept a medium truck as a family car, whether it has a pickup bed on it or not.

38. Real one-upmanship won't come from this vehicle
It will come from the Bad Boy Trucks rig that is in the Top Ten this week--a civilian version of the Stewart & Stevenson FMTV the Army has been buying for a few years.

I think this one's going to be more popular, at least with construction companies, than the International CXT. Bad Boy has the good grace to at least leave the 16-foot bed on the damn thing, which is more than I can say for International. We sell a lot of stuff to a lot of Fort Bragg units and every time one of those units brings an FMTV to pick up an order, some contractor will see it and mutter something to the effect of "you know what I could do with that?" It is the perfect vehicle for roughing-in commercial buildings, because it is made to haul freight over really bad terrain.

And if you look at the Bad Boy Trucks website, they basically admit that someone who would buy it and not work it is buying a penis extender.

painted red with gold striping, with a GPSS terminal, a siren, a rotating beacon and flashing lights, a big water tank, hoses, a St. Florian Medal, a Maltese Cross on each door, a turn out coat and bunker pants and helmet on the back seat.

Oh yes -- you have to follow the Code of St. Florian and the Maltese Knights of St. John of Jerusalem -- BE PREPARED TO UNHESITATINGLY LAY DOWN YOUR OWN LIFE FOR THOSE IN DISTRESS.

I was driving through Southlake, Texas, the SUV/H2 capital.

They didn't look that well-built. When I was behind them, it seemed as if their bodies were twisted to the driver's side. The metal looked flimsy. I was not impressed.

It isn't an SUV or pickup at all. It's a modified big rig without the trailor. You don't get a sense of how obscenely large it is from those pictures. You have to climb into it. It was disgusting.
