When Democracy Failed - The Warnings of History
It started when the government, in the midst of an economic crisis, received reports of an imminent terrorist attack. A foreign ideologue had launched feeble attacks on a few famous buildings, but the media largely ignored his relatively small efforts. The intelligence services knew, however, that the odds were he would eventually succeed. (Historians are still arguing whether or not rogue elements in the intelligence service helped the terrorist. Some, like Sefton Delmer - a London Daily Express reporter on the scene - say they certainly did not, while others, like William Shirer, suggest they did.)

But the warnings of investigators were ignored at the highest levels, in part because the government was distracted; the man who claimed to be the nation's leader had not been elected by a majority vote and the majority of citizens claimed he had no right to the powers he coveted.

He was a simpleton, some said, a cartoon character of a man who saw things in black-and-white terms and didn't have the intellect to understand the subtleties of running a nation in a complex and internationalist world.

His coarse use of language - reflecting his political roots in a southernmost state - and his simplistic and often-inflammatory nationalistic rhetoric offended the aristocrats, foreign leaders, and the well-educated elite in the government and media. And, as a young man, he'd joined a secret society with an occult-sounding name and bizarre initiation rituals that involved skulls and human bones.

1. My understanding...

is that there is plenty of evidence that the Nazi's staged the 'terrorist bombing.' I'm not sure I saw that in the article. (I might not have read it for that closely enough.)

2. They gloss over it a bit in the 2nd paragraph

From what I've read, the experts are pretty much split 50-50 on whether it was staged or not.

I just wish more Americans knew the facts about Hitler; if they did, they'd be as concerned over the similarities between Hitler & bush as the rest of the world is.

3. Thanks, Lynn. I see you stay up late, too. The British history in Iraq

from WWI and the post-WWI period is telling, as well. http://news.independent.co.uk/world/fisk/story.jsp?story=532136

There are too things going on to the RW's advantage:

This administration's fascism is very subtle and couched in democratic-sounding terms.

And the previous period of peace and prosperity has removed average Americans from the experiences which kept them cognisant of the dangers of fascistic tendencies within this society, so they don't recognize it when they see it.

I don't find their fascism subtle, and the world sure has picked up on it, but for those who only watch 10-15 mins of MSM while waiting for their dinenr, and of course about all rightwingnuts, it wouldn't be glaringly obvious that bush and his administration are, in fact, fascists.

And I think you're exactly right re average Americans being so far removed from the dangers they're not recognizing them.

When anyone dares mention Hitler and bush in the same sentance on this, a progressive board, they're shouted down. AMAZING! It seems most Americans only know the 1940s Hitler; death camps and millions dead. They don't know anything at all about all the years that lead up to that, and it's the path bush is on now.

"The Big Lie", "terrorists", "Homeland Security", "Patriot Act", "Guantanamo Bay", "pre-emptive strikes", "invasion & occupation", "loyalty oaths", "media control", "paid shills", "with us or against us", "God's army", etc etc etc;..it's all been done before. By Hitler.

I truly hope we don't end up as the Germans did, one day wondering how millions are dead and how we could have allowed it to happen.

My sister-in-law is a somewhat-ditzy but average American. Definitely NOT a freeper. She rescues every stray animal that crosses her path, loves her family, and is loyal to her friends.

She also thinks we should "just kill them all, every Muslim".

What's the difference between her "kill all Muslims" and the average German brownshirt or Nazi and "kill all Jews"? Me, I just can't see any difference whatsoever.
