Why do Republicans hate marriage so?
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 09:49 AM by Modem Butterfly
Republicans are chipping away at the very foundation of marriage. They want to stop people who want to get married from getting married. They want to force people who don't want to be married anymore to stay married. And now, in the Terri Schiavo case in Florida, they want to limit the power of a husband to make health care decisions for his wife.

2. They don't hate marriage, they just want it back to the way it was
You know, when a man owned a woman and had complete authority over her.

Isn't that "traditional marriage"? And that's what they are always pushing.

3. They do provide a conundrum
Not too long ago in American History, conservatives hated homosexuals for their alleged hedonistic, anything goes, sex in the streets lifestyle. Now, homosexuals say we want to settle down and get married and conservatives continue to hate them. They hate consistently. And why do conservatives have to amend the constitution to ban homosexuals from getting married? BECAUSE THE BAN ISN'T IN THERE NOW! And as for covenant marriages, Tina Turner sums it up best, What's love got to do with it?

4. Here's a description of an early Anglo-Saxon marriage
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 10:26 AM by Nimrod
During the ceremony the bride's father would pass the groom one of his daughters shoes to signify the transfer of goods. The groom would then rap the bride on the head with it to show that he was her new master. The bride's parents would then throw an old shoe after their newlywed daughter to indicate they had relinquished their responsibilities for her.

The wedding ring was originally regarded as a down payment on the bride and a sign to other men that she was no longer available. It was, literally, a "property sold" sign. It didn't become a symbol of fidelity until the 10th century or so. The ring was worn on the left hand because that was typically the weak hand symbolizing woman's submission to man.

Rice thrown at weddings is a symbol of fertility, done so the woman would get pregnant as quickly and as many times as possible. The reason for the "June Bride" tradition was so the woman could work the harvest, have a baby in the spring, and recover enough to work the harvest again.

There's your "traditional marriage". It's not between a man and a woman, it's the domination of a man over a woman. It has nothing to do with love.

5. Wow, put your rose-colored glasses away!
:D

No wonder homosexuals feel cheated by not being allowed to share in this glorious institution!

6. ::grins::
I'm still a bachelor, myself. Believe me, I could rail on about what marriage "stands for" for pages, I've just learned to constrain myself. :)
