Why is it when I click on DU I get a pop up and tracking cookie
I check for spyware on a regular basis (ad aware and spybot)and I noticed that every time I log in to DU a pop up appears on my task bar. Then I rerun ad aware and there is a tracking cookie. Whenever I go to buzzflash, dailykos, etc. I don't get a pop up or tracking cookie.
Is it just my computer? No. I have logged in to DU on two other computers and the same thing happens. Are others experiencing what I am?
DU is the first site I visit every day to get the latest news and I don't want my internet movements tracked. Any ideas?

1. What browser are you using?
Switch to Mozilla and you can control cookies and popups very easily.

5. Have you tried "tools" & "pop-up manager'?
What I love about Mozilla is how easy it is for me to tweak the site rules

15. Fastclick is spawning popups
from an embedded Flash applet.

Type about:config in your URL bar
Right-click. Select New --> Integer
Type in - privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins
Give it a value of 2

7. IE
I have used mozilla in the past and was not comfortable with it.
The other computers I use have IE and I can't download software (I am not the administrator).

18. The popup people have cracked Mozilla
and you'll now get the same trash that plagued IE.

Just kill the popup manually. Some people have complained about viri being transmitted by the site being advertised.

12. I have Spybot search and destroy and Spyware Doctor
and regularly block tracking cookies, BHO (registry) changes, and the like, particularly start page hijackers. All you need is to have Elite Search Miracle as an adversary just ONCE, and you will do whatever it takes to keep junk out.

Also have Adaware, Hijack this, and a couple of separate pop up blockers...it is sad that you have to have so much software nowadays to just surf the net.

I would love to have a spyware uploader in a soundproof room alone for 5 minutes...sigh. Security nowadays, for even small load balancing server farms like mine, is a never ending, minute by minute job.

8. Does your browser have a new search toolbar?
One that you didn't used to have? One that's called "search toolbar"?

10. I don't think it's a tracking cookie (such as spyware)
But just a regular cookie to keep your login and choices set.

The pop under is part of DU.

Please, go ask this in ATA. They can explain more throughly.

The one I just got was something about stopping spam emails. :(

16. That's odd all I get is a pop under
If I use IE it's an ad, with FF it's blank.

17. Since this came up, my Firefox also gets a popunder only on DU
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 06:55 PM by BusterD
Since I installed Firefox several months ago, I've enjoyed the benefits of zero popups. Now DU gives me a single popunder ad, the only site to do so. Looks like time for a Firefox revision 1.1.

On edit: popunder, not popup
