after reading _most_ of the link. Granted this is just my 2 cents. Your mileage may differ. But one /dot poster said:

All I see posted are stupid remarks about how ironic this is... but nobody seems to want to do anything about it.
/. has enough people reading it to destroy the bandwidth of half the servers out there, but it looks like nobody is going to take this as a serious
threat to privacy and call up their congressman or write a letter/email to major news networks, or anything else that will change things...
It's a sad day seeing this article exist, but it will be an even sadder day when 90% of these comments are scored "Funny" and we are doomed
to sit idly by our world is taken away from us... thanks guys, i appreciate it.

Now here's my observation. There are so many threads here linked to major newsites, blogs, leftwing sites, etc that are posted with snippets of news, stories, conspiracy theories, whatever, that as a member of DU i am more than inclined to follow and read, OR NOT.
I will most likely NOT to if: it's an MSM site, a rightwing site, or just a link with no idea of what may lie ahead. Why waste my time or become laden with spyware, etc. What to do? what to do....
first: If you are going to post a link to a MSM site, do us all a favor and post the PRINT EDITION OF THE STORY. Look around for it
(consider yourself a Scout for the opposition) and find the print edition. Here's why:
check out these two examples of the same story i selected at random from the NYTimes.
1:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/25/politics/25fda.html?hp&ex=1109307600&en=78884bdf1cefd6de&ei=5094&partner=homepage2:

Well, the first is laden with ads, which gives revenue to those ad suppliers
every time someone views it.
The second is supplied by one (usually) co. that is sponsoring the print edition. Many times they are supportive or are in fact Arts representatives, and they will get some much needed hits. Gods know they aren't going to get it from the Gov't. Right?
Look again at the 2 links above, one is laden with ads, the other is simply providing the information you may have wanted to provide.
Which is the more direct? Which one feeds the man, which one is more in line with your thinking?
hell, since i'm on a soapbox, i'm going to go for broke....just a followup to another gripe/peeve i mentioned above.
DU has rules about how much of a story you can provide due to copyright restrictions.
FOR GOODNESS %*&!# SAKE if you are going to all the trouble to start a thread pointing to a link, at LEAST PROVIDE SOME TEXT OF THE STORY...and not just the link. Why else would one want to click on it? Haven't we all progressed beyond a guessing game?
climbing offa my soapbox now.
Peace all.
