Have you seen the new Burger King commercial?
It's got a black cowboy playing a guitar, singing a pretty catchy toon and then keeps showing real buff cowboys and real hot cowgirls dancing around doing sexy stuff. I thought it was great, but I about died when the end came and I found out it was for Burger King. I saw it on Comedy Central. I thought it was going to be for the Man Show or something.

1. The black cowboy
is Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish. I still can't believe he did that commercial.

2. I thought that was him...
I couldn't believe it either, he is "hard-up" for cash or something?

4. I don't know

He's supposed to have a solo album coming out.

On edit:

His solo is already out. It must not be that great because I hadn't heard of it before tonight.

19. Why? He isn't doing anything else.
Hootie and the Blowfish had their 15 minutes. Darius probably didn't make much off the record sales and needs to make money any way he can. Sometimes you just have to sell out if you want to eat.

6. I really dislike Burger Kings' ad that parodies "Big Rock Candy Mountain"
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 10:08 PM by Rowdyboy
That song is reflective of a generation of Americans who suffered tragically during the Great Depression. To mock it the way Burger King does is offensive. Compare the commercial to the version on the score of "O' Brother, Where Art Thou?" and you'll see what I mean.

15. I don't mean to offend
but you get offended easily. It is an ad to sell sandwiches; I really don't think they are mocking the tragic suffing of the Great Depression. Great movie though. Is you is or is you ain't my constituency?

17. I know...I hate seeing old rock songs used for commercials too....
I'm not "huffy" offended, just sad that such great work is abused so badly. That Burger ad sucks, IMHO.

18. One that I hate
"The Weight" being used in that wireless commercial. I don't even know for sure what company it is, I get so pissed off every time I see it that I don't even notice.

22. I'm offended by the Kia commercial that goes "Ask not what you can do for
Kia, but ask what Kia can do for you". Twisting the words of a great President like Kennedy to shamelessly plug cheap-ass cars is in bad taste.

23. I'm with you
Its pretty shitty that they used a classic folk song to sell burgers, especially since they probably had no clue how shitty their rip-off was.

13. The background on "Big Rock Candy Mountain"...
...that I heard from old school folkies (those who never wore cardigans) was that the song is supposedly being sung by the character of one old hobo to a youthful, rookie rail-rider as an attempt to get the ingenue off alone where the old guy can molest and rape him.

The moral of the story (as so many of those old folk songs do indeed have) is that if "it's too good to be true," all you're going to get is "screwed" in the end.
