Sorry if this is a dupe, but I just got a "free, please subscribe" Rolling Stone in the mail and that article may just persuade me to subscribe. (I haven't had a subscription to RS since the 80's). Issue bonus: Green Day on cover and good article about them.
Anyway   on the Sinclair article, highly recommended reading. It talks about Stolen Honor and the boycott of advertisers. Quote from article about CEO Smith and VP Hyman's take on the whole thing:

"Fox proved one thing: People like controversy," Smith says. "I'd do one of those Stolen Honor specials every month if we could. The lesson was .....we can do this kind of content, pre-empt the networks and make more money."
Hyman agrees with his boss. The controversy "was worth $10 million in free advertising," he says. "People who'd never heard of us before suddenly knew who were...."
