OK, who wants to help out with JEFFGANNON.ORG?
As some of you may know, I was shocked to find that jeffgannon.org was an available domain name yesterday... So I registered it. I'm not sure what we should do with it yet -- whether to put up a blog about all things Gannon, or a parody site, or a little of both, or something else... But chances are that the domain name will give whatever we put up there instant visibility.

So, here's what I'm thinking -- if you're interested, post in this thread. I'll look through your posting history and if I'm satisfied you're not a freeper-creeper (for everybody's good, we don't want a troll), I'll IM you the password to a chat room. We'll set up an AOL or a Yahoo chatroom or whatever, and get together there and iron out the details of how to do this.

So, post WHAT you're interested in doing (web design, writing, illustration), WHAT you think should go on the site, and TIME(s) (this weekend) when you have an hour or so to meet online and chat about this.

1. Count me in.
No freeper here. I do a bit of writing on the side for my company.

I would like to see a parody site that maybe could expand to include more of the hypocrites associated with the right.

I am usually available on weekends, but Sunday afternoon would be absolutely perfect for me.

2. I'd be very interested in doing a little humor on a parody site...
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 12:04 PM by Crankie Avalon
...like what I did here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3176546

Maybe I could do a "Jeff Gannon takes you there" sort of thing, where I'd pretend to be him and "report" on events by writing captions for topical photos of Bush making state visits, vacationing, or whatever he happens to be doing at the current time--captions that "unwittingly" end up making Bush as leader, and Gannon as sycophant, look like fools.

I could also write more narrative type satire.

I only have internet access at work, so I'm not available to talk on weekends (not on the computer, anyway...maybe I could give you a phone number?). I'd be able to work on stuff during breaks from work during the week, though (like what I do now).

P.S. Maybe I should also add that I'm the editor of our customer newsletter here at work.

3. Avoid the gay aspect as much as you can...focus on the money links
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 11:58 AM by Roland99
I'd put up a summary of everything from the blogs and the MSM to date.

Focus on the link to the Eberles and the Texas GOP and to Ashcroft/Rove.

And, if well link to this, it will bump up on Google's search results.

10. The most valuable issue this site would have
is to expose the propaganda network of the Republicans/Conservatives. A site with verifiable connections of these people showing how the "Conservative Messengers Club" of brainwashing (and lying) are all in bed together. (figuratively speaking, of course)

A focus that doesn't shoot the messenger, but exposes the method without tinfoil accessories would be most informative.

:)

PS - I'm on a real rip today with this propaganda thing; especially after hearing Ed Schultz yesterday talk about some details on Limbaugh's government approved Afghanistan appearance.

20. I'm in
I run my own blog A World Where wRight is wRong -- you can double check my thinking there.

Since I'm way left-coast (1 more hour than PST) -- post the time for Chat based on some standard that I can figure out -- but I can be around Sunday a.m. my time -- afternoon your time

If we want jeffgannon.org to take off rapidly, all of us will need to link to the site via our own websites to get it's rating up quickly. Blogs rank higher in google than forums, although if one uses the "short html" format, forums can do well, too.

I think that half of what is needed to be done is to counter every single Jeffie posting with a counter article that is the "mirror opposite" -- this would drive him nuts

23. I am interested
I think a parody site would be appropriate, with maybe a section of it being a blog of news events surrounding the story. I would be interested in helping with the writing, web design (to an extent), and image work (if I can get my photoshop running on this computer).

This weekend I will probably be free whenever, but I am in the UK (I am studying abroad), so I am five hours ahead of you all on the east coast, though in the evening your time is fine for me as I am a night owl.

35. Well, after having talked to a bunch of people about this....
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 03:18 PM by Goldmund
...I think I'm moving away from the parody idea. For a few reasons:

1) The domain name is very visible, and it would be a good chance to present the HOWs and WHYs of the Gannon saga, dispell the right-wing bullshit such as their characterization of this as "gay-bashing," "personal life intrusion", "targeting the conservative reporter", etc. It's a good chance to make it a site about the Bush propaganda in general, and use Gannon as a symbol of that propaganda.
2) It would be difficult to avoid giving undue stress to the less relevant aspects of this story (sex) if this were a parody site, because, let's face it -- in our culture, exactly those aspects are the ones most succeptible to humor. Untangling the political implications of this story isn't so funny; but picture Gannon huffin' and puffin' on top of Rove, and you get instant laughs.

This isn't to say that we shouldn't have a parody, cartoon, etc SECTION on the site -- but I don't think that this should be the entirety of the content.

As far asd involving a freeper or two (or a conservative, in general, a Gannon/Bush defender) -- I think that it would make sense to do so if we are trying to build a site against PROPAGANDA. We're not hiding anything, including opposing opinions. And it would provide interest and dynamics.

Of course, I know all of the arguments against this idea... I'm just throwing it out there.

in order to keep it "fair and balanced" -- however they must submit their articles/postings/questions in advance for approval -- there should be no objections to this it's the same process they go through when they attend a bush town hall meeting...

In BTM, the parties are proud of their bad deeds so they dish the dirt on themselves. As parody you can put attribute mean spirited snarky dialog to the people involved. Rather than use audio, you can PhotoShop photo illustrations with speech bubbles.

As Eric Boehlert mentions this morning, the man formerly known as Jeff Gannon has re-launched his Web site -- and we don't mean hotmilitarystud.com. Gannon's "journalism" site is back up at jeffgannon.com; internet entrepreneurs should take note that jeffguckert.com is available from Go Daddy for $8.95 a year.

also should have area related to the GOP-backed ads/info/fake news being pushed -- can call it CRAP (Commentary-Rhetoric and Propaganda)
