ATLANTA (Feb. 25) - Tom Ridge, the former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and former governor of Pennsylvania, was named to The Home Depot's board of directors, the home improvement retailer announced on Thursday.

"Tom Ridge served his country with great distinction, and we are honored to have him join our board, where we expect that his unique global experience and perspective will make a profound contribution to our company and our shareholders," said Bob Nardelli, chairman, president and CEO.

As Homeland Security chief, Ridge pushed a a short-lived 2003 campaign urging Americans to have duct tape and plastic sheeting handy to protect themselves from a possible chemical and/or biological attack.

The campaign was widely criticized as ineffective and unnecessary, but it prompted many people to buy the materials. Some retailers reported running out of the supplies.

and there really is no link between Lowes & WM, but there has to be a reason every Lowes I've ever found is next door to a WM.

I try to shop at other hardware and building supply stores instead of either big box, but they've driven so many of them out of business, the only HW stores we have that I'm even aware of are Ace and True Value. There are NO independants at all.

I'm so averse to WM, I stay out of Lowes because of that.

They do their damndest to entice people into inappropriate do-it-yourself projects, because that way they make twice as much money-- once selling them the stuff for the project, and then again selling them the stuff to clean up the mess and make repairs when it all goes to hell.

They've become more blatant about it lately, too. One of their biggest revenue centers is now pimping for underpaid local contractors to come out to your house and professionally clean up whatever mess you made trying to do it yourself.

The hell with Home Depot AND Lowe's (who aren't much better.) Shop at your local hardware store and your local lumber yard. Get your local appliance dealer to order stuff for you. Let your fingers do the walking on the 'net.

And hire a local, licensed (preferably union) skilled tradesperson to help you with the tough bits. This will GREATLY improve the resale value of your house, since no one wants to take over someone else's do-it-yourself laboratory.

That is now the first thing I ask the real estate agent when home shopping 'Have all the repairs and remodeling projects been done by licensed contractors?' This is the result of paying THOUSANDS of dollars to put right stuff done by the do-it-yourself-er previous owner of our last house.

So, yeah... shop at Home Depot. "Go ahead! What can happen?!?"

21. I work at Lowes

Just a few objective comments.

1. Lowes is a much safer place than Home Depot. The measures Lowes takes to provide a safe environment for both employees and customers is pretty incredible. You have no idea how much weight is on those racks, and every precaution is taken against accidents. Having said that, accidents do happen.

2. Lowes is in no way tied to Wal Mart. As a matter of fact, they are direct competitors in certain product groups. Lowes (like Home Depot and any other major retailer) do follow a Walmart-esque model of business though, which involves channeling cheap ass Chinese-labor-camp goods for a huge profit. You should look up LG Sourcing sometime, see what they do, how it pertains to Lowes and other huge retailers. I could rant for days about that arm of American Imperialism.

3. In general (and I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule)you won't get better customer service at another home improvement retailer anywhere.

4. Lowes Nascar angle blows.

5. Shitty pay generally, great stock options, horrible other benefits. And piss tests.

6. I'd bet money that Lowes bigwigs are Rethugs. No ifs ands or buts about it.

7. Its generally fun to work there. Of course there are shitty days, but you get that at any job. And you learn tons about home improvement.
