The trouble with democracy
The problem with democracy is that it blinds we who have experienced it. Because it's so great for us (corporatization aside) we see it as something that should be given to everyone, like Bush to Iraq. It's not just Bush, of course. The United Nations tries to install democracies wherever they go.

The problem with this is that we only use our own mode of democracy. In lands where tribes and clans mean more than nation states, Western democracy is like a square trying to fit into a circle.

We need to encourage respect for human and civil rights, and maybe let democracy grow on its own.

Case in point: The UN's been trying to install Western democracy in Somalia for years and has historically failed.

The de facto state of Somaliland (search it on Google, it's seriously cool) was abandoned by the world after its secession and after a civil war, developed its own clan based democracy; Bicameral congress, one elected by people, on full of clan elders.

That's how we spread freedom. Democracy follows respect for human and civil rights.
