Is Jeff Gannon Just a Bad Reporter?
Gannon Also Believed to Have Disguised His Identity in South Dakota on More Than One Occasion in 2003

Remember the good old days?

Remember February 10th, 2005?

When the conservative news outlet Accuracy in Media (AIM) reported that an exhaustive list of Jeff Gannon's journalistic "crimes" would include no more and no less than the following: "he was too pro-Republican, he attended White House briefings, and he asked questions unfair to Democrats"?

God, we were young then.

.

Times changed, though, didn't they?

1. No, he's not a reporter at all.
He never wrote a single article from a press conference. All he "wrote" was plagiarized word for word from WH press releases.

The kindest thing one can call him is "propagandist," there to spew right wing cant so that legitimate reporters wouldn't be permitted to ask legitimate questions.

13. I'd call him a criminal.
GOPUSA is nothing less than a journalism chop shop.

They steal the works of legitimate journalists, chop 'em up, and regurgitate the material as if the own it.

They are criminals, and need to be prosecuted.

And there's always that thing about attacking democracy.

16. Would You Call A PR Agency A News Department?
All this goon did was cut and paste RNC PR releases...playing telegraph by spreading a regime lies as others linked to his/Talon's articles which then got all over wingnutland. He also sat in the WH Press Room asking highly partisan "questions" and to intimidate other "reporters" who worked there.

A reporter is exactly that...one who cites the facts from the record with little to no embellishment. "Gannon" was taking talking points and spreading them...just like a promoter.

If we're still discussing if "Gannon" was a "reporter" or "journalist" or anything more than a RNC mole, this story will have become a great opportunity squandered.

18. More straw and no facts.
GOPUSA/Talon has been shown to be a plagiarism chop shop -- and I'm not talking about PRs.

Ignore on.

3. Propagandist
pure and simple. He was there to dispell the smell of truth if too many questions got asked and the place got stinked up.

And if you listen to some people, he might also have there so the person in front of the reporters would have something 'nice' to look at... (snicker snicker.)

He's been a very naughty boy indeed! He must be held down and spanked! He must be spanked very forcefully! He must admit that he is a bad reporter. He must admit that he's been a very bad reporter. Then he must be spanked even more forcefully, before he can be let up. :spank:

8. On a more serious note:

HUNDREDS of federal employees sport fake degrees.
THIS is one of the MAJOR reasons why no-one is eager to confront Gannon on his fake credentials.

May 11, 2004
WASHINGTON - At least 28 senior-level federal employees in eight agencies have bogus college degrees, including three managers at the office that oversees nuclear weapons safety, congressional investigators have found.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4951979/

NUCLEAR WEAPONS SAFETY.
COMPROMISED.

05/11/04
.... Alan Contreras, administrator of the Office of Degree Authorization of the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, highlighted the potential that diploma mill degree holders could be blackmailed—a serious issue for those who hold security clearances.

For example, Contreras said, in North Dakota misrepresenting a diploma mill degree is a felony. Other states such as Oregon, New Jersey and Indiana also penalize diploma mill degree holders, he said.

After the hearing, Contreras said, "As a society, we have become addicted to paper credentials...we think you need a degree to advance. I would like to see de-emphasis on paper credentials."

Contreras said most of the complaints his office receives about diploma mill degrees concern public sector employees, many in the public safety, medical administration and educational fields.

Laurie Gerald, a former employee of diploma mill Columbia State University who is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to one count of mail fraud, testified that "Columbia State had no faculty, qualified or otherwise, no curriculum, no classes, no courses, no tests, no one to grade tests, no educational facilities, no library and no academic accreditation." Gerald described the cynical frauds and flamboyant behavior of Columbia State owner Ronald Pellar, who grossed $20 million from the scam.

Pellar carried a briefcase with $100,000 in cash and buried gold coins in his back yard, she said. He brazenly faked accreditation, transcripts, testimonials and other marketing materials for the school and was convicted of several crimes.

Collins, in her opening statement, noted that diploma mills devalue education, cheat legitimate students, employers and their clients, menace public safety and have bilked taxpayers. Collins distinguished between diploma mills that simply sell pieces of paper and those who practice "a more sophisticated form of deception," with attendant higher charges.
