The Conservatives have succeeded in taking us back to the 1950's
The goal of the conservative movement in American politics has been to take the country back to an antiseptic, Leave it to Beaver version of the 1950's that never actually existed.

What they don't realize is, they have taken the country back to the real 1950's. All of the fearful ugliness of the 1950's can be found again in America.

Consider...

1) Rampant fear, paranoia and bigotry rule the day.

2) We have a national bogey man again (Terrorists replacing Communists).

3) Gays are the new "niggers", as "social conservatives" nationwide seek to enact a new type of anti-gay Jim Crow system.

Consequently, if recreating the 1950's was the conservatives' goal, it's been a resounding success up to this point.

1. Try the 1890s to 1929.

The era of the robber barons and rampant uncontrolled
unregulated capitalism.

That's where we're going. Before The New Deal and
labor laws and any consumer protections of any kind.

2. Don't forget the minimum wage: earning power is rolled back
A planned unfortunate series of events.

3. It can't last.

Don't know about you, but the job search is going terrible for myself and a lot of other people these days, as the opportunities for employment and advancement continue to fade away into outsourcing, economic decline and government funding cuts.

People who are unemployed don't live in a world of illusions. They can't afford to.

The 1960s will be roaring back with a vengeance very soon. And this time, there will be no turning back.

In the 60s people used to yell " Get a job you damn hippy ! " you sure don't hear that now. After 1 & 1/2 years of no work something better happen soon because I would rather die than be a greedy neocon turd maggot.

9. Let's just say that we didn't quite get it right in the 60s
And we're getting another chance to go through it again.

Of course, as you pointed out, things will be similar, and yet so much different this time. The stakes are also so very much higher.

It's not so much about Civil Rights this time around, but our will and desire to work together as a society for the greater good of all. Energy and resource management is going to play a key role in forcing our hand on this answer. HOW we answer this question is going to determine whether or not humanity will survive the challenges of the coming decades.

Rest assured that NeoConservatism, Corporatism, Bushism, or whatever you choose to call that which plagues our country and menaces the world today, is not the correct answer to our impending circumstances, and will NOT carry the day when the SHTF. And it WILL hit the fan.

Unless we are somehow able to sweep those short-sighted, obstinate perspectives aside and replace them with truly liberal-democratic solutions, humanity and the Earth itself face a grim and desolate future, the likes of which none of us would ever want for our children and grandchildren.

5. well, after the 50s came the 60s...
So I guess we can eagerly await for the next decade to bring lots of good things. If there's still a planet Earth by then, of course...

6. Don't forget, HIGHEST teen preg rate EVER in 1950's
But, rich folk had rich-folk doctors and extended "vacations" with Aunt Mabel in Kansas. Reg'lar women had to resort to the infamous back-ally abortions which killed so many. Ah, the dawn of an old era is upon us!

W is not for Women.

8. If it were only that bad
At least in the 1950's, we had a thriving middle class, rising standards of living, low crime and strong labor unions in the United States.

I would say the Gilded Age of the 1890's is more appropriate.
