School Board Bans Photo Of Girl Wearing Tux

POSTED: 10:29 pm EST February 24, 2005

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- After a spirited discussion over a photo of a girl wearing a tuxedo at Thursday's Clay County School Board meeting, the principal's decision to ban the picture from the Fleming Island High School yearbook stands.

Kelli Davis, 18, had her senior class photo taken in a tuxedo top and bow-tie outfit provided for boys rather than the gown-like drape and pearls provided for girls. The school's principal decided it could not appear in the yearbook because she didn't follow the dress code.

Kelli, a straight-A student with no discipline problems, is a self-proclaimed lesbian. She said she was uncomfortable to have her chest exposed in the photo.
<snip>

While the board's ruling will keep the photo from appearing with other senior pictures, it will appear in the yearbook. Kelli's parents bought a two-page ad in the back of the book for $700, which will feature the picture.

6. A guy and a girl couple came to our prom, both wearing
tuxedoes. It was in the sixties.

They looked cute. No one cared.

2. Why doesn't "Authority" realize that by always making a bigger stink over
things like this, they actually give their opponent way more power and press. Good for Kelli. This will "rock" on her college resume.

3. Why on earth would the principal care?
What, does he think straight girls are going to see her in a tux and say, "Hey, I had no idea lesbians existed! What a great idea! It would never have occured to me to be a lesbian, but now that I've seen a girl in a tux I've decided to give it a try!"

Note to the principal: Just let the kids wear what they're most comfortable wearing. And then get a life.

4. Jaysis, what did they do with the Goth kids?
Tart them up in suburban honky tonk gear with the piercings and black lipstick?

This is so damn stupid in so many ways.

5. Gosh...and you' d think the school board GAVE
these yearbooks away, too. I thought students had to PAY for them, and in doing so they should have the right to choose how they would like to be represented in their senior pictures, barring obvious public decency laws.

The school board knows these yearbooks are remembrances for an entire lifetime - how kind of them to plant this kind of memory in the mind of a young woman to carry around for the rest of her life.

Sounds to me like the principal is just pissed because he can't show up to work in a skirt.
