More RW Academy Awards Censorship in the Wings...is Carlos Santana next?
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 06:58 PM by paineinthearse
Mods, please do not move to the lounge, this is a censorship watch post.

Carlos Santana will be performing tonight, just saw him being interviewed on E! as he arrived.

He's wearing a Che Guevara tee shirt under a jacket. Bet the censors make him change?

2. We already know that Robin William's shtick had to be scrapped...
I'll bet they have, like, a 7 minute delay on Chris Rock.

Carlos Santana to Perform Oscar(R)-Nominated Song 'Al Otro Lado Del Rio' With Antonio Banderas at the 77th Annual Academy Awards on 2/27
Thursday February 24, 3:33 pm ET Carlos Will Be Joined on Red Carpet by His Wife Deborah Santana Whose Memoir 'Space Between The Stars' Arrives in Stores Next Week

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician and 10-time GRAMMY(R) winner Carlos Santana will perform "Al Otro Lado Del Rio," one of this year's five Oscar(R)-nominated songs, at the 77th Annual Academy Awards ceremony this coming Sunday, February 27. Accompanying him on the song, which is from the acclaimed film The Motorcycle Diaries, is actor -- and in this case vocalist -- Antonio Banderas. It marks the first time that either Santana or Banderas has performed on an Oscar show and broadcast.

When Carlos arrives at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre for the globally telecast event, he'll be joined on the red carpet by his wife and author Deborah Santana. Ms. Santana's first book, the memoir "Space Between The Stars: My Journey To An Open Heart" (One World/Ballantine Books, hardcover), arrives in stores nationwide next Tuesday, March 1. Though autobiographical in nature, the volume doesn't follow a strict chronological timeline. Rather, with bold and moving prose, it spotlights key experiences in the author's ongoing spiritual quest, her evolution as a woman, and her thirty-plus year relationship with Carlos Santana, with whom she has three children.

The 77th Annual Academy Awards, featuring Chris Rock's premiere appearance as host, airs live on ABC Television at 8PM (ET)/5PM (PT) on Sunday, February 27. Artists performing other nominees in the Best Song category include Beyonce, Josh Groban and Counting Crows.

Deborah and Carlos Santana have been married for 32 years. Carlos is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; has sold more than 90 million records; performed to more than 100 million people; and, he was honored with the most GRAMMYs given to a single project in the history of the awards for his landmark CD "Supernatural." Santana's most recent GRAMMY win honored the hit "The Game Of Love," from his 2001 album "Shaman." Currently, the artist is underway with the recording of his 38th album, set for release this year. Deborah is a writer and author who will release her debut One World book entitled "Space Between the Stars" in the spring of 2005. She is also a highly successful businesswoman as Vice President and COO of the New Santana Band, Inc. Together, Deborah and Carlos have been change agents for social activism for the majority of their lives. After supporting hundreds of causes and benefits, they founded the Milagro Foundation in 1998. The Foundation has granted almost $2 million to charities and agencies that support children and youth in areas of health, education and the arts. In 2003, they became involved and deeply committed to donating and supporting programs to help with the AIDS pandemic in South Africa through Artists for a New South Africa. Their good work continues.

4. Robin Williams First Target
I don't know if this has been posted on ABC's action against Robin Williams.

ABC execs axe Robin Williams skit
by James Welsh
Sunday, February 27 2005
Digitalspy.co.uk.

Executives at American TV network ABC have forced Robin Williams to axe a song poking fun at anti-gay political pressure group "Focus on the Family" from his time on stage at the Oscars tonight.

The group, headed by James C. Dobson, went on record last month as saying that cartoon characters including SpongeBob SquarePants were "promoting homosexuality" in America. The New York Times reported late Sunday that Williams had planned to use his minute on stage singing a satirical gospel-esque song about Dobson's claims - but that ABC's broadcast standards unit wanted 11 out of 36 lines of the song cut or rewritten.

Williams had planned, according to the Times, to sing the song in the voice of a preacher as if he were identifying, fire-and-brimstone style, other threats to American society. Lines such as "Pinocchio's had his nose done! / Sleeping Beauty is popping pills" were, however, deemed too strong for the primetime broadcast.

10. Actually, I do think it's time to think about petitioning
the Academy to exclude ABC from future contracting the broadcast rights.

5. ?
Would someone explain to me why no one can change the channel anymore? Yet it's ok to show the carnage going on in Iraq.
When's Powell leaving the FCC, hopefully soon. Are they going to show Spongebob on a delay at 2:00am now?

13. I hope they aren't making him cover it up.
Personally, I'm decidedly not a Che Guevara fan, but I think America's virgin eyes can handle it.

That's normal, though. I could tell it was his Che shirt.
