Another Department Store merger
Sear had bought Land End....Then Kmart bought the new Sears....Now Federated DS and May DS are merging........and they wonder why everything looks the same?? There is no reason to shop at any of them any more...I only shop online from catalog companies that offer variety

1. I went to the COOLEST little store in Sunnyvale today.
I never knew it existed, but it was so 'rockin' that we threw down $167. They had a 'No, George, No' book in the window.

The good stuff exists... look for it, and purchase!

2. Shopping off line
is a pain without a car. I can get everything I need delivered to my front door and never have to leave the house.

5. I shop on-line too, but your dollars have LEFT your community
I shop locally as much as possible. I e-bay as well (on a lark).

Nothing substitutes putting $$$ back into the community you are living in.

7. Do you live in a small town?
I agree that what you are doing is important BUT my saving the environment by not driving is also important considering Peak Oil

9. Los Altos, Silicon Valley Megalopolis.
Driving kids to school (2 mi away) is a given. I try to do errands prior to work (generally 10:00), and do errand prior to getting kiddies. I am sooo into LOCAL - sometimes I have to drive an extra 2 miles, but those $$$ stay in our area.

3. I usually buy stuff online but with all the unusually high
amount of privacy hacking going on, I'm starting to get leery of it.

Soooooo, the BofA had the fed's info stolen... well, who'd a thunk it. Now they know how WE feel when our problems with banks, cc, and privacy is messed with.

Over the radio last night the subject of identity theft came up. A woman called in to say she was an Avid E-Bay shopper. She assumed it was secure and went about her business buying something else. One day she discovered her bank account had been drawn down, but not by her.

As it turned out, someone on E-bay hacked her info, ran strings of numbers til they found matches for her debit/ATM card, then began to draw down on her account until it was empty. They FINALLY found out the operation was coming from two places: Transylvania and Budapest <sp? This woman lives in Oakland CA.!!

I'm not liking anything about the electronic age anymore. Geeez

10. LOL.......
I used to just buy from catalogs......maybe I'll return to that. At least I'm talking to a real person and often times they have their own credit cards.

If "they" want to steal my identity, I'm going to insist they take the whole enchilada: the bills, the kids, the hubby, the worries....and just let me go off free as a bird. LOL

Tahiti here I come!

6. Department stores are dinosaurs
Few of them have any differentiation. That's why they're merging...trying to survive.

I didn't know Dayton had sold Marshall Fields to Federated till I read about May's purchase a few weeks ago. May will probably close or rename all of Fields' locations except maybe the State Street store. Fields used to stand for quality and class in Chicago, but Dayton fucked that all up. Now it's just another place with too much markup. The last time I shopped there was maybe five or six years ago.

I'm like you now. I shop online. I'm rarely disappointed by the merchandise, and I'm never worn out with nothing to show for it by the end of the trip.

I just don't have the time, energy or desire to run around on the bus trying to find stuff. I can shop at 11PM at night online....If you didn't see my post... I have my groceries also delivered..and love it!

11. Oh yeah, I forgot that one... I have my groceries delivered
every so often from an online main stream grocery. Pretty safe bet.

Love it! I'm like you in that I don't have the energy to schlepp through countless stores and aisles looking for what I want. I ADORE the fact that stuff can come right to my door. It's a bit like xmas every time a package comes.. :P

12. when do they buy-out G.U.M.?

Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (GUM), the largest department store in Moscow, is popular with both tourists and locals. The name in English means “State Department Store.” GUM was established in 1921 and sells a variety of goods, including food, clothing, and home appliances. (MSN Encarta)
