Since when is peace a bad thing?
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 06:59 AM by mandyky
I've been wondering this for a week or more now after reading this article - http://www.palmbeachpost.com/opinion/content/opinion/epaper/2005/02/20/a2e_moffettcol_0220.html
Titled -
Dean reflects party's weaknesses
Vermont peacemonger won't turn red heads.

PeaceMONGER - what the heck? Monger is usually a negative conotation - like warmongering and whoremongering.

And when people say Dean appeals to the anti-war crowd (like Chait of TNR), Dean always made clear he was NOT anti-war across the board, he just felt shrub hadn't made an honest case for THIS Iraq war. He supported Gulf I War.

Jolly Buddah over at MYDD has a good diary on Dean and being proud to be a Democrat. http://www.mydd.com/story/2005/2/28/33420/6963

2. since BushCo made barbarianism fashionable again
now hate is all the rage, as it were, and anyone who brings up peace, except in the context of war, as in: "we're invading this nation to bring about peace" , is giving aid and comfort to the 'enemy'.

Wow. I'm to the left of Dean.

Peace was a crazy notion in Jesus' time, too. I guess more people want war -- they outnumber us insane, wacko "peacemongers." I'm not anti-war across the board, either, but it sure as hell should be a last resort and virtually always only in self-defense. (Note the word "virtually." In several Repuke blogs, a recent DU rant of mine was slammed for being isolationist and anti-every-war. They took my remarks out of context and did not include a follow-up post that clarified my position. I was called everything but a white chick. Everything is either/or in their world, isn't it?)

As far as I can tell, Dean's positions re: war/peace seem to be the most realistic I've seen on the left lately. Hell, at least he's not afraid to stand up for true Dem values! I don't recall being a Dem meaning that all war and all defense is bad, just that peace was the ideal, the goal. We Dems traditionally have not had a deep-seated need to hear our gonads clacking together as we enter any given situation, from the war room to the board room to the bedroom, no need to prove ourselves because our mommies didn't love us enough (or whatever). I like seeing a few Dems stand up for our traditions now and then. I hope to see more of them do so, or else they need to stop cashing their paychecks. The spineless Bush-enablers are NOT true Dems and do NOT represent Dem traditions.
