So did Bush get his flight suit landing idea from "Independence Day"?
I was taking a break from studying last night, so I flipped some channels and came across the end of "Independence Day".

I've never watched the whole movie, but I saw the part with the heroic president fighting the evil aliens, and the exciting victory.
I noticed that after the battle was over, the prez spent a lot of time swaggering around in his flight suit, looking studly.

It seemed to me that Bush or someone close to him saw that and thought, hmmmm.....

BTW, that movie had to be the worst bit of formulaic, sentimental clap-trap I've ever laid eyes on. I never was very interested in seeing it, now I'm pretty sure I never will.

Anyway, anyone think our glorious president's aircraft landing in flight suit may have been "inspired" by the movie?

2. Yes indeed
the whole neocon movement is a block buster movie that has been re written so many times it lacks any soul .
Tune in next week for " Yo Spring Break " or " Iran Invasion "
the graphics will be great but we gotta come up with some really " now " music for the pitch.

5. "We shall not go quietly into the night..."
had to be the lamest line ever in a movie! It sounded just like something Bushie would say.

Shittiest dialogue ever. Even Troma pictures have better dialogue.

8. Wha????
Wow. And I thought the movie was incredibly lame. That's even lamer.

I'm glad I missed that. Or maybe if I heard it, I didn't know what it was, not having seen the movie.

16. Anti-Clinton?
You lost me on that one. I saw the movie a couple of times, I never once thought of Clinton, Bush, Reagan or anyone.

22. Really? It's the timing of when it came out. They make a big
deal about having a military hero prez (read: not draft-dodging clinton) yet they give him a drab looking wife who gets killed because she is performing some meddlesome political work instead of being home with the kids where she belongs (read: u know what smart first lady they despise).

I got their subliminal drift loud and clear. Glad you didn't!

17. Not necessarily. After all he calls himself the "war president"
and hey, he has some old photos in uniforms - as opposed to those "draft dodgers" including Clinton - so they decided to milk this.

Of course, this before their "shock and awe" turned into pain and wow..

18. too funny, I was wondering the same thing last night
When I saw the movie years ago I thought it cartoonishly entertaining, but must less so when I caught the tail end of it last night.

The strutting and posturing and over-the-top macho dialogue were too reminiscent of our "war president".

"Todaaayyyy ... is the daaayyyyy ... we celebrate our Indi—pendence Daaayy!!!!!"

If extraterrestrials ever did come here to destroy us, it'd be far more likely that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum would hack into and implant a virus in the alien ship's computer, than the Shrub would don his trusty flight suit and lead the attack.

The idea had to come from Rove or one of his handlers.

Which is more Presidential?

20. Wouldn't Surprise Me
I wouldn't be shocked at all if the idea for Shrub's pathetic attempt to look like a war hero came from "Independence Day". After all, the movie's probably required neocon viewing.

I mean, it's not only one of the biggest piles of haphazard cliches, repetitive action scenes, and half-hearted attempts at comedy in cinematic history, it's also stereotypical nationalistic "America saves the world" BS. And how can anyone assume that an alien race would use computer systems that are compatible with anything we have? How in the Hell is it even remotely believeable that a Mac and a little C++ can take down super-advanced alien defenses?

The movie's stupid enough to be on *'s level, so it wouldn't surprise me if he was watching it one night, got the idea to try the flight suit landing, ran it by Crashcart and Rove the next day, and ended up doing it. Rove probably wet himself imagining the possibilities...

23. I thought it was 'cause Dubya wanted to one-up his good buddy ,
Pootie-Poot.

Wasn't there a picture in the press some time back (prior to the Dubya's aircraft carrier stunt) of Pootie sitting in the back seat of a MIG fighter which he was using to hitch a ride somewhere?
